View Full Version : Computer Geniouses Gather Round.
Powerboss 08-04-2001, 06:07 PM Ok, heres the problem.
I try to run scandisk, then after thats all done I run defrag.
The problem is, like last night, I went to run scandisk, it kept starting over, and over, and never got anywhere.
It gives you that message, scandisk has restarted 10 times because another program is in use..blah..blah..blah.
I have gone into msconfig and unchecked everything in "startup" and do the ctrl/alt/del and shut down anything else that may be running, but still over and over and over it just keeps resetting and starting over.
Whats the deal?
Thanks in advance.

did u have the screen saver on?
ChaoticThoughts 08-06-2001, 01:13 AM ok, make sure screensaver, virus scanners, firewalls, and all other programs are not running. If any program is running, it will keep starting over.
Powerboss 08-06-2001, 04:33 AM No screensaver, I shut everything down.
When I hit ctrl/alt/del the only things running are explorer and systray. Ive even tried it with shutting them down but its the same old thing.

Hmm, do you have a virus scanner? Have you done a full scan? Sounds like something may be memory resident. (not a running program, like when you ctrl/alt/del but is resident in the memory...)

Rebel79 08-06-2001, 11:36 AM Hmm it always helps to reboot in that case and try to clean out the running progs. But I have a feeling you have done that already. http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif
Powerboss 08-06-2001, 05:35 PM Done it, done that.

Do you have compression turned on? Also have you tried running it from safe mode? Check for a file called Flcss.exe if it is there you may have the fun love virus.
Powerboss 08-08-2001, 01:19 AM Dont know about compression, its probably however the computer came. I dont ever recall changing anything about compression.
How would I check for that?
And,
Do I want compression on or off?
How do I get it in safe mode?
I gotta hit some Fkeys or something like that right?
Looked for that file, no dice, no love bug.

ChaoticThoughts 08-08-2001, 02:53 AM How long do you leave it alone before you try to restart it? For me, it takes about 10 minutes to really get going, then I leave it alone until it is done.
Powerboss 08-08-2001, 03:14 AM If I am reading your question correctly, I turn it on and let it go...Sheesh, I let it go all night long and when I checked it the next day, it was still at the beginning checking folders and all the initial stuff.
Grrrrrrrrrr.

MyStiK 08-08-2001, 07:07 PM the only time i have ever had problems with that is when i was trying to install USB on my Win95 box. boy what a B*TCH that was. it ran for about 18 hours before it completed. i have never run into that problem with anything Win98 and up. if you have some sort of energy saving on where the hard drives turn off after a certain amount of time that might be it but i doubt it. do you REALLY need to do this anyways ?
