If I was to want an AMD 1.4 gig chip, what motherboard would I need?

I ask cause if I get a raise someday, I want to buy a new puter, but Dell only has Intels. My only choices are get a complete Dell system or build again. I kinda don't want to build again, cause my bud that helped me build my current sys lives way far away and I dunno anyone here. We have gateways here at work and they suck a$$ bad.

oh well, thought I would throw this out.

and just to elaborate a little more... what would be a great value setup? I love to online game, so an awesome vid card is a must.

so, lets say, what 1) Motherboard 2) CPU 3)Video card 4)soundcard

I am sure I would go with 256mb of ram and a 19" monitor. Prob 20gig hd, maybe 40

yes, I am bored at 5am at work =]

While the AIW Radeon is an awesome card, it may not do the task if you like games at great depths and speed. The Radeon DDR 64mb falls below a GeForce 2 GTS 32mb, and the AIW has even less ram than its bigger brother. The TV in is a huge plus, but for games, the graphics power will soon not cut it. With prices dropping real quick, your best bet would be an Nvidia GeForce 2 Ultra for around 200, or a GeForce 2 Pro for about 150. Those cards do wonders.

Oh, and if you're willing to dish out some cash, Tyan makes the Thunder K7 motherboard, which accepts dual AMD Palaminos/AthlonMP(T-bird made for servers).

Tyan S2462NG - Thunder K7 AMD Dual mainboard - Palamino AMD ATHLON MP CPU with CPUS - AMD Athlon MP DUAL (2) 1.2GHz Socket A (266 FSB) heatsink and fan AMD approved 3 Year warranty cpu
Price-$869 Expensive, but you'll have the fastest box in town.

True about the AIW, it all depends on what you do. Me, I like video capture, and it cranks out the graphics pretty good. As of now, I'm running 2 yr old Voodoo 3 3500 with video capture (all in wonder voodoo?) and it's able to crank out the graphics quite nicely with it's 16M of memory. Just for the record though, I installed a fan, and overclocked it from 140 to 200 mhz.

I say stray away from a dual athlon setup for now, chipgeek had some problems reported in dual athlon setups.

I'd wait about another month. Chip prices keep dropping because AMD is trying to kill off its remaining inventory for the release of their new chip, Athlon4. When that time comes, you could probably pick up a 1.4 for about 110 bucks.

I don't plan on doing anything until I get my tax refund next year. I just wanted to see what my options were =]

I use pricewatch all the time. all my parts for this puter came from there. They rule!

thx for the info.
