Well, my sisters P166s HD pooped out.

I need to buy myyself a HD smaller than 8.4 gigs as the BIOS won't support anything larger.

Frys, best buy, CDW don't carry anything smaller than 9-10.

Any thoughts?

Just buy the cheapest drive you can afford. If I remember properly, the drive WILL work, but will top out at 8.4G. Actually, it could be partioned into many drives maxing at 8.4. Also, if you get a Maxtor or maybe a Western Dig, they should include bios drivers and utilities to make it go the whole way.

May be a little foggy because I haven't ran any of those silly utilities in yeeeeeears.

Manu, cant you just upgrade the bios? Or just buy a 10Gb and partition it or so?

Go to http://www.pricewatch.com and do a search for somethinng small. Just type it in the search window. I looked up 4.3 G and it had one for $40.

Thanks guys.

I can't find bios updates ANYWHERE.

I bought a 10 gig and it just wouldn't boot.

If the dirve was on as primary or secondary.

I even took it out, partitioned it into 2 gig partitions on my computer and tried it. No dice.

In the BIOS it DID detect is (maxxed out at 8.4 gigs) but it wouldn't boot past the bios when that drive was hooked up.

Pitch thanks. I didn't do a pricewatch search, just saw that in their list they dind't have anything.

Thanks guys!

take a look into the special software, something like Max-Blast from Maxtor (I doubt it'll work with other makes, but you get the picture). My bud has a 486DX66, and he has a 20gig drive on it, when the BIOS wouldn't support any more than... 4g or so. The program makes settings to the BIOS to make it happy, then runs a little pop-up program before it boots Windows or DOS, and makes the HD happy. I know Western Digital has a program like that out, as well as Seagate, and others. If you get a retail instead of an OEM, you should get this program (those stupid floppies we throw away).

The HD I ought was a maxtor, but it was oem...do didn't some with anything.

Id rather just buy one of the many sub 8 gig drives you guys have shown me.

My sister only used like 1 gig of her previous HD, so she doesn't need the mem.

No problem, but they don't have it listed right out, a search is the only way to get some of the older stuff to come up. You could even get a 486 there, if need be...
