View Full Version : Microsoft, Good, Bad, or just ugly? Manu 07-13-2001, 02:08 PM What are guys' feelings on Microsoft? As an industry leader, as a company, as an employer, video console manufacuterer, whatever... ------------------ Manu Narayan ChaoticThoughts 07-15-2001, 04:43 AM humm, thats a hard one for me. I learned alot while using windows, and it ok for most users. I get burned cds, so cost is not an issue. I dont really like their business tactics, but its cut-throat out there. I dont think it matters too much, I am betting Linux will replace windows in time. Just wait and see. buggy 07-16-2001, 08:36 AM I honestly don't see Linux taking a strong hold over Windows for average everyday users. I have been using it for a few years now, and there is no way in hell the average person will warm up to all the configuration issues. Granted, Windows can be as cryptic at times, but for simple everyday use, I doubt Grandma Marie will switch over to Linux. Linux is amazing...But having to go to the black screen again...(I know there are GUIs...) but it is a downgrade. The industry, regarding MacOS and Windows are moving away form even the inclusion of the black screen (winME removes DOS for all but a 'translator.') MS I think IS a good company. (here I come to get lynched). Their prices are not that bad (look at adobe product suites!!) And honestly 80 bucks for an OS is a good price. MS does have cutthroat tactics, but they all do. MS is just unlucky to be big. The only place I really see linux is like an OSX relationship. Where it is 'powered' by a linux kernel, but really isnt linux. ------------------ Manu Narayan ChaoticThoughts 07-16-2001, 10:50 PM Well, IBM is putting tons of money into linux research and developement. And maybe they can make the configuration a little less messy. Considering the cost and how quick bugs are fixed on linux, I think people will warm up to it. But as it stands now, its not for everyone. Snouter 07-24-2001, 10:31 AM My brother has used late model Mac's and PC's and strongly prefers Mac's without question. The problem for me with a Mac is that software developers don't make things I use for it. Certain CD-ROM's and stock trading software for example. As far as business, they are no worse than any large company with monoploistic tendencies. I would say AOL is worse in attempting to monitor and restrain internet activity. Although I have heard that Microsoft also attempts to monitor your internet behavior. Personally, I think the repeated upgrades indicate either that the previous version was bad or they are just selling corporations a bunch of crap that we don't need but have to buy in order for things to be compatible. My Windows 95 and Office 97 was easier and better than the current version I used on someone's PC recently. QUESTION FOR YOU GUYS::::::: How do I get Windows Internet Explorer to open new windows in a full srceen "maximum" size rather than a small screen "minimized" state. Thanks. [This message has been edited by Snouter (edited 07-24-2001).] Manu 07-24-2001, 12:29 PM I think it depends on the status when you 'close' a window. This is something I've never fully figured out. Just make your IE 'minimized' version large. Close it. And then when ya open it it should open that size. ------------------ Manu Narayan Snouter 07-25-2001, 01:45 AM Thanks Manu. That worked right now. I just have to wait and see if it retains that setting after I shut it down and start it up again. Snouter 07-25-2001, 10:55 PM I think I found it. The option is available to be adjusted if you "right click" the "launch internet explorer" button. Right Click "e" button Click Properties Select among the choices in the "Run" catagory. ChaoticThoughts 07-27-2001, 01:32 AM While you have the explorer open, press F11. |
