Only the individual who is solitary is like a thing subject to profound laws, and if he goes out into the morning that is just beginning, or looks out into the evening that is full of things happening, and if he feels what is going on there, then his whole situation drops from him as from a dead man, although he stands in the very midst of life.

I asked professors who teach the meaning of life to tell me what is happiness.
And I went to famous executives who boss the work of thousands of men.
They all shook their heads and gave me a smile as though I was trying to fool with them.
And then one Sunday afternoon I wandered out along the Desplaines river
And I saw a crowd of Hungarians under the trees with their women and children and a keg of beer and an accordian.

Jed, have you ever read "Letters from a Young Artist"? It's a collection of correspondence Rilke had -- and it's fabulous fodder for thought. Quite inspirational. Did this quote come from there?

No, I got it from a novel I'm reading where one of the characters quoted him. So maybe it is from there originally, I dunno. I will definately check that out though, I'll have to find a copy.
