I thought it was supposed to be a comedy. What a waste of ****ing film. I'm gonna go puke now.

I read the only redeeming part in the film is seeing Gene Hackman be a goofball for his short time on screen. Everything else sucked, according to the reviewers.

Wow, what didn't you like?

I thought it was great. It wasn't your typical comedy of today with slapstick humor and dick and fart jokes, but it was damn funny.

Oi! Wes Anderson is f**king fantastic!!! The Royal Tennenbaums wasn't as good as rushmoore, but goddam it's a good movie! Pitchafit, what is a good comedy in your eyes I'm wondering? Most "comedies" these days are lucky if I laugh out loud once. The Royals made me laugh many times, and the rest of the movie I had a grin. I guess similar to how you don't see how anyone could see it as funny, I don't see how anyone could NOT see it as funny.

Oh my god! that movie is awesome!
Pat and i saw it with a couple of our friends... our two friends chuckled every now and then, and pat was laughing, but I was just laughing my head off and chuckling throughout the WHOLE movie.

I came out, just so surprised that i was laughed throughout the whole movie.
The movie is funny.. but there arent set up jokes and traditional punchlines, it's just plain funny.

[but dont be too surprised, you guys might have guessed that Pat/Ali G/Slayr/Carl is a bit odd, so why wouldnt I(his gf) be a bit a offbeat too.]

C'mon, the scene with the tennis match, and one sock and shoe off. ... OH c'MON! Or when the Blonde Wilson is in his apartment, and you see those weird paintings. That damned red jumpsuit, and the kids who are just like ben stiller kinda. :)
"wildcat, ahhh, an in an obselete vernacular!"

I loved that movie.

I didn't see it thinking comedy. I laughed a bit, but it was more than a comedy to me, it was just extremely interesting.

I enjoyed it greatly and am looking forward to seeing it again now that it's on DVD.

For the record I actually went right out and bought the soundtrack for it after seeing it, if that gives any idea how much I liked it.

Here here!!

I have as good a sense of humor as anyone, but I thought this film just plain sucked. And I paid $8.50 to see it in the theater. What a waste.

I watched it and I liked it. It takes a lot to make me laugh though. To me, it's one of those movies you can't really put in a genre. It just tells a story of some whacked out family. It didn't have over the top comedic parts enough for me to call it a comedy. It had enough drama to pulled that way. It was just crazy. At the end I was left smiling and thinking "Hey, I really liked that movie, I'm going to buy it the next time I go DVD shopping"

I loved that movie! I also loved Rushmore -- haven't seen Bottle Rocket yet. I thought the casting was perfect -- the acting was brilliant. And that script was one of the most original ones I've seen in years. Cody and I couldn't stop laughing when we saw it.

Bottle Rocket isn't quite as good as the other two, but it's still really good. I hated owen wilson until the royals and bottle rocket. See Bottle Rocket.

I've never seen Rushmore. BTW, isn't this a thread about the Royal Tennenbaums?

yes, but the royals, rushmore and bottle rocket are all made by the same guy - wes anderson. And they're all very similar in style and humor.

Just bought it this afternoon at the ol' costco. That makes it my first DVD. And I don't own a player.

That must say something about my enjoyment of it.

And yes, the tennis match was funny, as was pretty much anything involving Royal.

Pagoda did it for me.

The best was when they were explaining how Pagoda and the father met...it was classic.

"He was carrying me on his back to the hospital.

How stabbed you?!

::Confused:: Pagoda of course"

I probably butchered the exact lines, but that was sucha great exchange.

just checking out the amazon.com reviews. stumbled on to this-posted by some dude who calls himself "lloyd mosaic"

disclaimer-pitcha, not implying anything. lloyd directed these observations at amazon reviewers. tho i am interested in your reaction. ;)

A Rant:Intro

I'll start off by saying 'The Royal Tenenbaums' is the best film I've seen in years. It's funny (though not the typical braindead comedy many thought they were in for),smart, interesting, mature and refreshing. From the acting to the set design this is top notch in every respect. This has moments of tenderness that few,if any, other American films tend to seek-let alone find. It's a deep breath of fresh air in this age of empty sequals, pointless remakes and action cartoons. This film NEVER insults your intelligence. It's a damn work of art is what it is.There are a few things I have to get off my chest,though...

The One Star Wonders

Any fan of this film needs to go to the Tenenbaums reviews, sort out the one star reviews and read all of them in a row. You won't believe your eyes. A few of them make a logical arguement but most are either:incoherant,semi-literate(at best),full of factual inacuracies and goofy justifications for why the film is "bad". You see people throw around truly worthless statements like "The worst movie ever made","low brow"-concerning one reviewers total misunderstanding of Dudley, who he believes is retarded,"boring"(a common one but never explained) and one reviewer who says the humor reminded her of Married With Children. You could say it's pointless to nit pick-one could go through the poor reviews for any product and do this-and be right. You could say that everything gets bad reviews-why bother? Here is why: These reviews are not only bad reviews but they are BAD reviews. It bugs me to see something I enjoy being misrepresented and ridiculed by such people. Of the 210 reviews 32 are 1 star reviews. These poorly written and vile coated things are swaying the overall rating of the film. Reviewers said this film was worse than: Dracula,Dead and Loving it, a root canal and Rambo! Come f**king on!! Worst of all there is a piece of crap that some how made it through-written by a Howard Stern fan, that's made clear-that unfavorably compaires 'The Royal Tenenbaums' to "bukkake". "What is bukkake?" you might ask...It's Japanese porno where a group of guys repeatedly ejaculate on the same woman. I looked it up. I've had things like hell or damn (or even brand names) edited out of reviews before they were posted-so I'd like to know who the hell let that slip through. You can go to the two star reviews too, where the folks tend to be more rational and a little brighter. At least here you see opinions instead of oddly vented rage. Still, there's people slinging around "vapid" and "inane" in an attempt to sound bright. Sorry...

More Of The Same

The arguements against 'The Royal Tenenbaums - Criterion Collection',as expressed by it's haters, can range from the idiotic (one person who objected to Royal's "racism" towards Henry-a non factor seeing as that person compaired it to Tarrentino's use of the N word) to the reasoned(some dislike it's self conscience quirkiness and a few point out the similarities between Wes Anderson's work and that of J.D Salinger) but I'd like to take a crack at refuting some of the most common ones.

1.)"It's pretentious and pointless"-Just because the characters were educated and unlike those seen in Meet Joe Dirt does not mean it is pretentious. A film like Waking Life, that crams it's creators pet theories down your throat in the form of rhetoric instead of dialog,is pretentious. As far as it being pointless-oh well. If you can't see the point in an interesting story and the the lives of the characters within that story I can't help you. Not all films have to have a simple and formulaic plot that only serves as a nail to hold up a technicolor dreamcoat of boring CGI effects.

2.)Nararation is a sign the film is bad(or something like that)-It's an easy way to condense decades of stories. Does a classy reading from the fictional book the film is based on make this film bad? No. Also,it's a shout out to the Magnificent Ambersons by Orson Welles. Does the lack of nararation,if your theory holds up,make Freddy Got Fingered a good film?

3.)"It's boring"-I know that the attention defficet/instant gratification crowd wants their explosions and aliens NOW! Why do these damn directors bother with this story crap anyway?I wish I could get you your 8 bucks back so you can go see Men In Black 2...

4.)The way Anderson uses music-This one is really weak. Why is the use of well selected and placed music(which is also just plain good) a crime? Is an overinflated John William's score any better? A zany Danny Elfman score? No. It's a stylistic difference and nothing else. Most films today just cram a few new metal dandies or hip hop tracks (seemingly selected at random) by big names in there and call it a day. Is that any better? Of course not...

5.)"Maybe I just didn't get it"-At last-truth. These folks didn't cover it up by saying it was boring or by making up stories about how the audiences almost mutanied because the film sucked so much. Many of the complaints come from people who don't like to be challenged. They don't want a film that's funny AND dramatic. They don't want films that don't spoonfeed them every little thing. Sad but true.

6.)"It's not funny"-Oh brother. Just because a film is subtle an doesn't resort to gross out humor doesn't mean it's not funny. By chance I've sat through both American Pie films and Freddy Got Fingered. Now THOSE films are not funny. Is that what makes YOU laugh?

7.)"I loved Rushmore but I hated this"-That's fair. You have to say that the films are quite similar in many respects, though. I believe Tenenbaums is the most "complete" film yet by this crew.Tenenbaums just hit me harder.Maybe you wanted a sequal or a complete remake-maybe more of Bill Murray. I don't know.

oh yeah-just for the record, i liked the first american pie.

I saw it for the first time today. I loved it. Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, and now The Royal Tennenbaums. The comedy was fast and witty, the family: truly unique, and the characters were developed and real.

I know I have to buy it now.

My favorite characters were Royal, Pagoda, and Mr. Sherman.

Oh I don't take it personally. In my opinion, this is like the story of "The Emperor's New Clothes". I do get the jokes, but I don't find them very amusing at all. Lloyd Mosaic seems to be quite proud of enjoying the film, like the villagers were so proud of "being able to see the clothes".

He is also stating his opinion as facts. He says the music was "well selected and placed music(which is also just plain good)". His opinion. I disagree. Also I understand why the narration was used. That doesn't change the fact that it annoyed me.

A man who loses his wife in a plane crash and later goes slightly mad and drags his kids down with him isn't funny. A man who has an emotional breakdown in the middle of a match and later slashes his wrists in an attempted suicide because of frustration over being in love with his adopted sister isn't funny. A son not being able to forgive his father isn't funny. A man worried about his wife cheating on him isn't funny.

Just because the jokes are subtle doesn't make them superior to any others. In the case of these, I think they are for the most part cruel.

And just for the record, I thought Freddy got Fingered was retarded.

as a person who thought the movie was funny i can say, Ben Stiller hhmm, it isnt the what that happens to the characters that is funny.. it's the how. (the occurences that happen because of being mag *shrug*)

but a viewer has to be understand there are other reasons for each character's odd behavior.

the humor comes in that fact that you are kinda poking fun at yourself. It's like no matter what horrible things happen in life you still have to be able to laugh, and laugh at yourself as well.
(and we all go a lil crazy sometimes, and we all have things from our childhood that dont get realized until we are older, and some of us never grow up and realize what is important until we are old.... and we will do all sorts of weird things because of all these reasons, but we dont recognize we do these things until we laugh at someone else doing exactley what we do.)
