I'm outraged! OUTRAGED! OUTRAGED!!!!

Georgia Republican Rep. Lynn Westmoreland used the racially-tinged term "uppity" to describe Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama Thursday.

Westmoreland was discussing vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's speech with reporters outside the House chamber and was asked to compare her with Michelle Obama.

"Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they're a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they're uppity," Westmoreland said.

Asked to clarify that he used the word “uppity,” Westmoreland said, “Uppity, yeah.”

Other Democrats have charged that the Republican campaign to paint the Illinois senator as an “elitist” is racially charged, and accused them of using code words for “uppity” without using the word itself.

In August, Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) told reporters, “When I hear the word ‘elitist’ linked with Barack Obama, to me, that is a code word for 'uppity.' I find it extremely offensive and John McCain should know better.”

Political consultant David Gergen, who has worked in both Republican and Democratic White Houses, said on ABC’s "This Week" that “As a native of the south, I can tell you, when you see this Charlton Heston ad, 'The One,' that's code for, 'He's uppity, he ought to stay in his place.' Everybody gets that who is from a Southern background.”

Being from the West, I had no idea about this either, and at first I was like "WTF." But apparently, east of the Mississippi, particularly south of the Mason-Dixon line, "uppity" might as well be spelled "n-i-g-g-e-r" and there's no question about it.

This is the same stupid Piece of Shit who went on Colbert Report promoting hanging the Ten Commandments on every public building in the country because they're so important and fundamental and essential, and when Colbert asked, he could only manage to name 3 or 4 of them.

Agree with CA that this is one in a long line of BS that should absolutely trample, demolish, destroy any notion that Republicans are at an unfair disadvantage when it comes to media coverage. (Emphasis on should.)

At the very least it should get the same publicity that "lipstick on a pig" got because of the word's history.

"Lipstick on a pig" should have gotten as much national media attention as when I pooped this morning.

WEll, I'm south of the Mason Dixon line, and where I come from, uppity just means uppity. My boss is a white dude, and I consider him to be extremely uppity. I also consider him to be arrogant, pompous and an all around a**hole, but it has nothing to do with race.

I guess it's really about intent. If someone intends a word to be an insult, then it probably is, if the person it's used on has any idea it's an insult. If the person isn't insulted, than I guess the joke's on the one trying to level the insult.

Hey ,a lot of my kin comes from South of the Mason Dixon line and historically "uppity" was a word used to describe (and target) a black man who didn't stay in "his place".

If you're younger than me then you might get a pass for not knowing that, but if you're my age or older there's no way you can't know that, unless you were very sheltered.

Pretty sure it's fair to assume this rural Georgian knows all about "uppity." The good-ol'-boy GOPers in the South love their code words.

Then again, he didn't know 7 of the 10 Commandments that he's in love with, so who the **** knows.

Heck, I live in AZ and the first thing I thought when I saw the word "uppity" was that n-i-g-g-er should follow right afterwards.

As the lipstick debacle proves, words have more power associated with them that we really want them have to sometimes.

Oh, knock it off. You spend your whole life outraged about something or other. Let us know when you're not outraged, that would be something new.

Let's see...could it possibly be that it was the Democratic Nominee for president who made that comment, and one member of a body with 435 members who made the other? Nah, they're one and the same in visibility to the public these days.

Give me a break. Keep this crap up and Obama WILL lose.
