i did think the movie was-- i dunno.. i mean i loved it, but i dont know if i can look at it as a great piece of cinema...
im not even sure why.. like about the things it lacked--but i did question the fullness of the characters at time..not necessarilly the acting, but maybe the writing or directing
but it was a way intense and emotional type movie... me likey
i need to read the book-- it bet that is a good read
how much did i love that quote about the wind ? anyone catchthat one... so beautiful
Scott 07-12-2002, 12:40 AM oh my....

Redfield 07-12-2002, 01:12 AM I hear that the book was an even greater tear-jerker.
illianna1782 07-12-2002, 01:30 AM it is...but also completely consumeing (the book that is)
I loved this movie. As a matter of fact, I just saw it for the 2nd time yesterday (it just came out on video)
Yes, it is a tear-jerker! I remember watching it in the theatre - you could hear people crying, and I'm sure even the guys there had a hard time not getting teary. :D

a big thumbs down to the movie itself :P
buggy 09-11-2002, 11:35 PM My co-worker rented this... he's a 32 year old *dude*... he said it made him teary eyed. I laughed at him. :p
The synopsis makes it sound kind of like... any old teenage romantic flick. I still can't bring myself to rent it. Maybe if someone can compare it to a good romantic flick out there...? :)

yes the book was a tearjerker and consuming, but was disappointed at the level it was written at--like grade school level... i liked the story, so i was hoping i'd have a nice juicy read..but it wasn't-- i guess i should have been clued ijn from the fact that an 11 yeatr old camper from my job lent me the copy of the booki
MonkeySkunk 09-13-2002, 04:00 AM I agree with Scott. The movie totally sucked. It was stupid and trite and the actors...well, let's just say that none of them are likely to be deemed "Academy Award Winners."
your ever-faithfull, heartless wench,
Monkey
When this movie first came out, I was listening to 'Duffy and Company' on KKLA, a popular Christian radio station, and Duffy was talking about this movie. He was saying how much he liked it, and that it was different than most typical movies these days, because of its Christian message. He also said that the snotty critics were slamming this movie, and that just goes to show how much some people can't stand to see/hear some of the things that this movie showed (in a positive way) - faith in a higher power, unconditional love, etc. The critics will deny that that is the reason they hated this movie.... they say its because its 'sappy', trite, not well-made, etc BS.
It wasn't as bad as they're making it out to be. It was not a cinematic masterpiece (far from it!), but it was good, and it had heart... something that those snotty, pointy-nose critics do not have (and apparently a couple people on this thread)
MonkeySkunk 09-13-2002, 10:07 PM One should not assume that something is Christian because it contains a Christian message.
I stated my opinion and I stand by it.
buggy 09-13-2002, 10:16 PM I dunno buttercup, Signs definately had a message of faith and it was well received... maybe they bashed it cuz it sucked! :p
/me runs.
Oh come on.... there are SO many really bad, crappy movies out there that don't get bashed. Movies with a really stupid story, and movies that you forget 5 minutes later.
Like I said, this one may not be some great piece of cinema (actually, Bonnie said that)..... but buggy, I'm not making this up -- you could hear people crying in the theatre!! (and this was in LA, not Pickletown Idaho!)
I don't go by what critics say that much.... Because (obviously I have different views than a lot of people) I've seen them praise movies that I hated - movies that glorify things that I detest. This isn't to say that they're never right, but they have their biases, just like most people. And the things that this movie showed (a girl staying a virgin till marriage, spiritual faith, etc) are not things that typical snobby NY or LA movie critics are into.
buggy 09-13-2002, 11:00 PM I believe you that the folks were crying, my 33 yr old male co-worker cried. :) I am going to rent it strictly on your word!!! That's a huge responsibility! j/k :p
I usually go to rottentomatoes.com... sometimes they're dead on. Granted, I saw "What Happened Was..." which many praised... I can see where it was imaginative, but at the same time, it was frustrating... had a very 'play' feel which came across odd on the screen.
You wanna cry? Watch Iris... I have no idea why I cried from beginning to end of that. "Wit" is also a "good" depressing movie. :) Some of my favorite actresses in both.
Thanks for those recommendations! :) I love sad/bittersweet movies. If a movie can make someone laugh or cry, it must be doing something right!
So you're going to rent it huh? If you hate it, you're never going to listen to me again.... :D
Actually, I have to admit... a big reason I liked this movie was the Christian messages... and also, the lack of useless violence, sex, profanity, etc. Its nice to see that for a change (without having to go see a rated G children's movie!) :D :)
buggy 09-13-2002, 11:34 PM I have very eclectic taste in movies... lately my moods have been geared towards the more charming (like Waking Ned Divine)... and even political comedies (today I rented 'The Candidate' w/Robert Redford).
It depends on the amount of 'sap' as to whether I'll like this one... I watched a movie the other day and the amount of 'bad luck' that hit this dude to give him the "let's feel sorry for him" edge was way overboard. Kind of like, made you roll your eyes or something lol...

yeah i love those kinds too- and that is absolutely right, if a movie touches someone enough to make them cry or even to make them feel then i think it should be given some credit-because not all movies can evoke a powerful response from its audiences, and isnt that what movies are all about?
i know people in this thread have commented that it sucked or the acting was terrible and not academy award worthy--but how many movies really are? Is a movie worthless if we dont want to award it with a trophy? i think the message was important--and i think they did a great job of portraying very spiritual ideas in a no-obtrusive way which is something that will touch spiritual people, but more importantly, the anti-spirituality crowd.
