If you read my first post, you know that I didn't finish my degree.... Well, its 5 years later and I'm going to be going back to school! The only thing that bites though - I thought I was done with math a long time ago, but some things have changed since I was at SFSU and now I'm told that I need another math class. So starting tomorrow, I'm taking a late summer session class - Statistics. As long as I get a C- or above in that class, I'll go to Sacramento State in the Fall. But uugh... I hate math with a passion!!! :( :p

So I guess I'll be staying in this area, at least for a while. I'm not exactly thrilled with that.... but that's OK.

Its actually really beautiful here, way out in the boonies. I said I'd post some pics, so I'll do that... (i just need to upload them)

I'll be back in a bit! :)

Good luck with that. Some math is so easy and fun to me, other math makes me want to tear my head off and toss it in the corner.

I keep forgetting to bring in an Avatar I made for you- it's a new Buttercup picture from the Movie promo.

BTW, I don't think I gave you my new site addy- www.geocities.com/luinnar

Thanks. I'm just not a math person, so I know what you mean about wanting to tear my head off!

You made me an avatar? :D Thank you!!

and I'll check out your new site!

I took statistics last fall, it was pretty easy. There are formulas, and ya follow the process and you get an answer, it really isnt that hard. *shrug* it turned out to be an easy A.

It's math, but it's kinda not... dont sweat it just yet. ;)
-your just taken a basic stats class right? i mean my boyfriend has taken like 4 stats classes and it gets more calculas-y as you go, but the first one isnt really so bad.

Oh no... I didn't realize it was harder than some of the other types of math! Shoot, I hope I don't have to switch to another math class.

The reason I picked it is because for some reason probabilities of things kind of interests me. How do they figure out the odds for something.... that sort of thing.

But now I'm scared!! :D

my friends too AP prob and Stats in HIGHSCHOOLl so they could get the easy A, and so it could count as college credit when they were in highschool. I took Stats and got an A, the first class of Stats is not very hard at all.. and of course just go to lecture and do the homework, and you'll be set.
(now that i think of it, i didnt do any homework for that class either)

Thanks turtle_o.... :) maybe it won't be too bad. Its Elementary Statistics, so I guess its the first one.

I have to do well in this class cause I need that requirement!

I took Statistics back in JC a few years ago.

I refused to buy the $100 graphing calculator out of principle, and still walked out with a B. I can only assume that it's easier if you actually have the tools at your disposal.

Good luck!

Justin

Statistics is an anylitical form of math. It is not the basic Calculus or Algebra, but a way to arrange numbers to observe the trends in change of collected data. You can discover what is the common high point of those numbers, or the common low, the average high, the everage low, the middle, the rate of change over time, things like that.

In other words, it is how to lie with numbers! :)

I think you'll like it, because it is not just math, it is logic and thought of how to arrange things. Plus, it will make you angry when you see how easy it is to fudge numbers of political polls, you'll learn that, too. Knowing all from class, you will never appreciate a poll ever again that you hear unless you do it yourself!

Justin - a $100 calculator? Yikes. Anyway, thanks! :)

Banky - heheh... I always did take those political polls with a grain of salt. In fact, it seems that most of them these days seem are not for measuring public opinion, but to form public opinion.

I've never taken it so I don't actually know. Of course my friends also told me that taking College Algebra at all was hard and that taking it in the summer as I am doing is just plain insane, and I have a full credit A in that class, so they not be the most credible source on the difficulty levels of math....

The first class was tonight, and I actually think I might like it. It doesn't really seem like math (so far) which is a good thing. ;)

You don't need a $100 graphing calculator; in my experience, they only really help in calculus. My graffitid old one works fine. Despite the coating of vivid and twink [yes, even over parts of the screen...]. Any modern scientific calculator works.

And difficulty....well, it depends on the course. Here, for University Bursary/Scholarship/Entrance, stats is the easy option [which is why I'm doing it this year; I'll save the hard one for next year, when it really does matter for uni, and when I'm ahead because of stats...]. However, in other courses, it could be anything from pointlessly easy to suicidally hard.

Good luck!

I am very happy right now. :)

I just took my midterm, and I was afraid I was going to bomb it because as I said, math is my worst subject, and since this is a condensed course, we're going through everything so quickly, and I was only getting about half of it. So I prayed for a miracle, and I got it. For our midterm, he did "a first". He allowed us to get into our groups (4 people) and take the test as a group. One scan-tron, 4 people... We were also allowed to use our book, notes, and calculator of course, so he couldn't have made it any easier. :D We definitely got an A on the midterm, if not a perfect score.

So now I can completely bomb the final and still get a B in the class!

I'm breathing a big sigh of relief right now. ;) :)

Its funny that I was hoping to just get a C, but now it looks like I can get an A in this class, and then I'm done with math FOREVER!!!

Wooooohoooooooooo!!!!!!!
