ok, well, there's a couple of threads about beer here now. I give you the beer thread to end all beer threads. so seeing as the topic is beer in general, I'll start off by naming what I've got in my fridge right now.

DFH 60min IPA
DFH 90min IPA
Redhook ESB (picked it up this morning)
TsingTao (it's not an uber beer but it is damn refreshing)
Four Peaks Brewing Company Kilt Lifter (picked up this morning as well)
Guinness Draught (bottles)

I am open to recomendations. :)

Oberon from Bells Brewery in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Has to be on draft. though. It's always a big deal in the local bars when the Oberon comes in; it's the harbinger of summer.

But imported German Warsteiner if you can get it, or Oktoberfest Bier the germans make their beer with no artificial additives so you can drink it and it does you good! (apart from your liver)

Fave American beer would be Anchor Steam beer.:nice:

Currently in my wine fridge are:

Mojo IPA (Boulder Brewing Co)
Dogfish 60 (never fails me when I can't decide what else to get)
Berkshire Brewing Company Coffeehouse Porter

Last night I finished off a Great Divide Brewing Company Raspberry Ale. 5.3% abv is pretty good for a fruity chick beer. It was the last of a 12 pack assortment, and fruity beer or not, the last beer had to be consumed. That was the last of four beers I had last night while I watched "Ratatouille." Pretty good flick! :D

I like beer.

The nice thing about hosting a party at my house for 12 mountain bikers is that I get to shop for beer. Mountain bikers have got to be the biggest beer snobs on the planet. Anyway, I bought three 12 pack assortments: The previously mentioned Great Divide (see post 9), Wolaver, and Flying Dog. I can't wait to break into those. Oddly enough, Wolaver beers are produced by the Otter Creek people, and I am really not that impressed AT ALL with Otter Creek beers. The Copper Ale makes me want to stomp on a kitten. But for some reason, they got it right with the Wolaver beers. Maybe it's the organic ingredients. I dunno. Both the Wolaver IPA and Brown Ale are excellent. Oh, and for my party tomorrow, I also picked up a big ass bottle of Yellow Tail pinot grigio for those non-beer people (mainly, the wives of the mountain bikers). I don't ****ing know anything about wine, so I looked in the $13-$15 range and picked a brand that seemed familiar. I also picked up a six pack of Mike's Hard Lemonade. I don't know...just to have it I guess.

And to bridge the gap between this evening and noon tomorrow, I picked up a sixer of Stoudt Scarlet Lady ESB (which I am drinking right now) and a large bottle of Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Ale. That one is pretty new and I've had it before. It is mighty tasty. I love the Sierra Nevadas...both the beers and the mountain range. Tahoe rules.

Oh, and I bought food. Not that the food really matters.

Gotta get back to cleaning this hellhole of a house now...

I went to a beer tasting party last weekend - it was a blast :)
The group each tasted (actually about 1/4 mug) of about a dozen different beers (each guest was asked to bring a six-pack of a non-mainstream beer) and then gave a very non-scientific rating of how they liked it on a scale of 1-10 (a far cry from a full beer review, but still interesting to see what people thought).
Here are the results we got, in case anybody would be interested:

Dragon’s Milk: Average: 8.5. Highest: 9.5(twice) Lowest: 7.5 (my personal favorite)
Dirty Helen: Average: 3.5 Highest: 5 Lowest: 0 (Yes, someone gave it a zero)
Dragon’s Gold: Average: 4 Highest: 7.5 Lowest: 2
Badger Porter: Average: 5 Highest: 8 Lowest: 2
1554 Brussels style Black Ale: Average: 6 Highest: 8 Lowest: 4
Headless Man Amber Ale: Average: 1.5 Highest: 3 Lowest 0 (Twice)
Mocha Porter (Rogue): Average: 4 Highest: 7 Lowest .5
Bully Porter: Average: 4.5 Highest: 6.5 (Twice) Lowest:0
Black River Red (Pioneer) Average: 5 Highest: 7 Lowest: 4
SummerShandy: Average: 3.5 Highest: 7.5 Lowest 0
Oscars Stout: Average: 7 Highest: 8 Lowest: 6
Celis Grand Cru Average: 1.5 Highest: 2 Lowest: 1

Saison said you can't go wrong with Stoudt's beer, so I've now tried the Double IPA (kicks ass), the red ESB (pretty good), and now the Double Blonde. This double blonde is awesome. Told ya! The double IPA used to have Simcoe hops which is one of my uber faves. I'm hoping that they're still able to use it due to the hop shortage. Also recommend their tripel, the fat dog stoudt, and their delicious festbier for malty deliciousness.

So how are their German pilsner and American pale ale?

Saison
06-06-2008, 10:51 AM
Both good beers, as memory serves. Pilsners aren't easy beers to make without incurring huge sulfuric notes in the aroma which is just a function of the lagering yeast and lack of patience. Their APA is another of the common beers that uses Chinook in the flavoring and aroma. It's a smart choice to make, as it's a lot stronger and cheaper than some others, but for me, I just don't care for it. That said, I've been known to order this beer on many non-consecutive occasions.

I was going to go for a run after work last night, but holy shit was it hot outside. I stepped outside and it was like stepping into an oven. So I bought a six pack of Flying Dog In Heat Wheat instead. It's a hefeweizen. Nothing like a few cold hefes on a hot summer night...much more enjoyable than a run. It was ok. I've had better hefeweizens, but I enjoyed it. I couldn't get the sediment from the bottom of the bottle no matter how much I swirled it. Makes me wonder how long the beer was sitting on the shelf.

I've heard of and seen hefe's that have been filtered. The cloudiness is due in part to the wheat that's used in the beer. A good hefe is 50/50. Half barley, half wheat. Hefe is a young beer, so it shouldn't be sitting all that long. And considering that it's a seasonal, I have no doubt that this is a reasonably fresh beer. Thing is, flying dog makes huge batches of beer, so the yeasty goodness that would be more present in a beer from a smaller brewery isn't as present. Still, I would take beer over running. Good choice!

I cracked it open earlier today. started out a bit sour with a slight bite to it and as it warmed slightly after pouring it just got sweeter and sweeter and sweeter. it was at it's best about 5-10min after pouring. I wish I had a thermometer on hand. my beer fridge is around 40 degrees last time I checked so I figure it was about 50-55 degrees at its best. it's hard to say without a thermometer. it was absolutely awesome. I am going to buy some more for my bitch ass brother next time he is here. Betty would love it. I might go to AJ's Fine Foods one day when I have the money and buy what they have in stock. It was about $7 a bottle. I think they had 4 or 5 on the shelf. Best Belgian strong ale I have ever had and more accurately the only Abbey Dubbel I have ever had. I look forward to more. :nice:

I had a bunch of FREE Troegs beers this past weekend, courtesy of a guy I know who works there. They don't distribute in Connecticut and I have never tried their stuff before. I tried their:

spiced tripel
doublebock
dreamweaver wheat
dead rockoning porter
IPA
golden pilsner
nugget nectar

All of them were great. The tripel was my favorite. The IPA was very good. It had some sort of smell that I couldn't quite place that I had not smelled in an IPA before. I want to say it was pineapple or grapefruit but that can't be it. If I had to pick a least favorite, it was the porter, but generally speaking I am not a big fan of porters. That said, I still liked it.

Beer is good. Free beer is better. LOTS of free beer is heavenly.

I was thinkin bout you when I bought it. I poured it tonight and it was super refreshing. the second ommegang product that I have indulged in and certainly the best. It will be in my beer fridge at all times. Perfect beer for gatherings since the taste is so refreshing that it is something that even people who don't like strong powerful brews (belgian strong ales and the likes) will enjoy. I am going to have to buy 3 more bottles. 2 to keep in the fridge for an occasion and one to drink right away.

I mean, with the success of the micro industry and the growth of interest in homebrewing, wouldn't this be a nice bi-product of collected efforts? If you had a beer that you didn't know what a bud product and liked it, that's not such a bad thing. it's not like you're chugging an actual bud light or something. :)

the problem with macros in the US is that it is the same old shit over and over. there is no improvement in their macro lineup unless it is to put some sugar in the beer after the fact along with some lime flavoring and call it miller chill and market it to people who really don't like beer. their actual beer lineup is entirely unoriginal and the quality is mediocre at best because of the precedent they have set. It hasn't been about making good beer for them. it's been about money. Now that micro and craft brews have taken off the macros are at least making an effort to pick up part of that market by showing what they are capable of. so far it isn't too impressive but it's far better than the previous swill. It's pretty funny when the beer magnates get shown up by the likes of Korbel (yeah the cheap champagne company....see russian river brewing co.).

My second batch is an Oktoberfest. It'll be ready a week after batch one is ready, so it'll be like all of a sudden I'll have a shitload of beer in the house. :)

Next up in the beer queue is a tripel (six month conditioning on that one) then a coffee stout. I figure by Christmas I will have done 5 or 6 batches using the Mr. Beer setup, so if those all go well I'll be putting a "real" starter kit on the holiday want list.

Lost Abbey Judgement Day (http://ratebeer.com/beer/lost-abbey-judgment-day/64627/)

A 10.5% ABV Quadrupel

Commercial Description:
A massive beer in every sense of the word. A stronger and more contemplative version of our Lost and Found Ale. Judgment Day is the base beer for our Cuvee de Tomme. Many of the Trappist Breweries produce a version of beer which ages incredibly well for many years to come. And, since none of us knows when the end of the world is coming, we suggest you stock up with lots of Lost Abbey beers so that when the end of the world magically appears from no where, you’ll have a beer or two on hand for even the stingiest of angels. Available in 750ml bottles and on draft at select inspired locations.

Lost Abbey Red Barn Ale (http://ratebeer.com/beer/lost-abbey-red-barn-ale/64608/)

A 6.5 ABV Saison (how fitting)

wow. you're not kidding. I like when a brewery gets creative with their labeling. makes them all the more unique. Lost Abbey is like that. So I went to the Mount Snow brewers fest yesterday. I drank beer...holy hell did I drink beer. Here's what I remembered drinking, in no particular order:

Dogfish Head 90 (had two of those)
Sam Adams Oktoberfest
Long Trail IPA
Harpoon IPA (two)
Harpoon Oktoberfest (two)
Allagash Tripel (three)
Magic Hat Lucky Kat (two)

I know what I like, so I stuck to the styles I like best. No ciders, no browns, porters, stouts, pale ales, etc. Not a single DIPA at the event, which was disappointing.

I knew early on that it was going to be a good day. I wore my Harpoon Hefeweizen shirt. So I walked up to the Harpoon tent and asked for an Oktoberfest. The Harpoon rep said to me "Good shirt." I said "Good beer!" I went to hand him my beer coin and he said "Keep it", then looked to the other guy in the Harpoon tent and said "Keep this guy's glass full today. And it's on us." FREAKIN SCORE. Seriously man, I only wore the shirt because I like the beer.

The Allagsh Tripel rocking the ****ing house though. God was that good stuff. All of the pourers were very generous. A $2 beer coin was supposed to give you an 8oz fill, but most of the fills filled the pint glass.

Naturally my wife found a sucker to flirt with and didn't have to pay for a single SMUTTYNOSE beer. :p And she somehow got a t-shirt out of him too.

All that beer and no hangover today. I think I have a problem...the problem is, I wanted a fourth Allagash Tripel but they ran out. :(

yes, it's a flavor of chinook hops that I'm more sensitive to. It's a bittering hop, but some breweries use it as flavoring as well because it's got a higher alpha acid percentage than some others. with the hop shortage I've been seeing more and more of this. Well, I ended up at PF Changs last night (it's a stupid story....things we do for our wives ) but I decided to order a beer. it's been a few years since I has some weissbier. When I ordered I wasn't specific. the only weissbier that they had on the menu was the Widmer Bros stuff so I just asked for a Hefeweizen. when they came back I was pleasantly surprised that the widmer stuff was not what I got. I liked what I got a lot better. It was Franziskaner.

I usually don't drink many beers that would be considered refreshing. I prefer my beer to be a meal. but this shit was pretty good. super refreshing. and very tasty. no noticeable bitterness from hopps at all but that may be due to my relatively tainted palate from drinking the meanest stuff I can find. this stuff went really really well with chinese food. yes, and usually a lemon. but it doesn't spoil it any less. and actually, it's not how it's supposed to be imbibed it's merely an adaptation that has proven common and accepted (unfortunately). the same thing is done with corona. Flavoring your beer still taints your beer. it's an afront to the beer. it's like saying "god this wine is so dry can somebody hand me a big bottle of welch's soda and some sweet&low".

the people that do that are the people that when the subject of beer come up they say "I like beer" and then you ask them what their favorite is and they will probably name corona and say that they like it with a lime and then you as why a lime they say "because otherwise it tastes like beer and I like to think that I'm just drinking kool-aid gone wrong" :|

adding flavor to your beer that was not already there is bullshit.

I will say that Corona is still better than Camo an natty light. :|

Betty told me about camo once. As soon as I turned 21 I had to go find it and see if it was as bad as he claimed.....I found out that it was.

This is quite possibly the worst beer I have every had. Three of us had the misfortune of sampling this vile brew a few years back. We even buried one in the ground and dug it up a full year later and it didn’t faze the taste. Two of us almost threw up after the crack as the aroma hit our noses and it was commented that this beer was so bad that two of us had a hard time keeping it in our mouths long enough to even swallow it. And do not let this warm up while drinking as it only gets worse if that is even possible. Now in fairness I have tried it since and it was slightly better the second time but by no means a pleasant experience. Unless you are hard up for a quick buzz and short on cash I would avoid this swill at all costs.

Well, even if there's pay options I normally won't take it because it's normally an insult towards the host. Like you're saying "No, I don't want your crappy beer, I'll buy my own!"

I agree if you're at a small gathering like a friend or relative's house, but at something like a wedding or company function, passing on the cheap beer wouldn't be an insult.

I have our annual "Meeting of Management" to attend next month. I don't know who chooses the beer for these things, but I have been delighted with the beer offerings the last few years. They always seem to have a few local microbrews along with the usual macro swill.

like I said, if I can avoid being a dick. if it is a party or somekinda gathering, I won't do it. if it's my parent's house, I will bring my own. if it is my buddy's house, I'll bring my own, probably something special and I will share. in essence, it needs to be a situation where the soul purpose is to get wasted.....then I will drink the shit beer. I did however go to a party saturday night and got wasted on decent beer. most of my friends will pay a premium even for parties. I guess at the same time I'm not used to going to parties with shit beer anymore. all of the parties I go to have good beer.

A friend gave it to me. I've only used pint glasses until now. It really does make a difference in the overall experience of the beer. The aroma really comes out using proper glassware. A noticable difference. I think my beer senses are more tuned in than I gave myself credit for.

Man, this is like saying "Recommend me some food." There are so many types of beer, brands of beer, and subtle differences that it's hard to name specific beers to try. If you are used to drinking Bud, Coors and the like, I'd probably suggest something that's not too different. Right now we're kind of in between beer seasons, with Octoberfests starting to disappear and winter beers starting to show up. Seeing how you're used to lighter beers, I'd suggest some pales ales:

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (Sierra Nevada brewery)
Anchor Liberty Ale (Anchor Steam)
Doggie Style Classic Pale Ale (Flying Dog Brewery)

Those are three that are widely available and come in six packs.

Another good idea is to pick up a 12 pack sampler of any brewery. That's a great way to try different styles of beer from one brewery. Sam Adams makes good ones because they've got six styles. I don't know what's available in Atlanta for a microbrew selection, but you usually can't go wrong with any 12 pack sampler from a microbrewery. They'll usually run you about $12.

I'd like something more substantial/thicker than Bud, with more flavor and maybe a little bite to it. I think probably the best beer I've had so far came from the Gordon Biersch microbrewery/restaurant in Atlanta. It was called Marzel I think. I also liked Boddington Ale. Does that help?

Talk to someone who works at the beer mart and they'll recommend something. Tell them what styles you like and what you've enjoyed in the past. A good liquor store will be able to recommend wines or beers.

yes, that does help.

I've been thinking it over and I can name some off the top of my head that you should like but at the same time these are beers that are available in my area so you may or may not find them. if you have any trouble, I'd be glad to help you find them in your area.

1) Ommegang Hennepin (always a winner)
2) Ommegang Abbey Ale
3) Spaten Oktoberfest Ur-Marzen
4) Paulaner (just about anything by them, it's all pretty decent.)

in that list, the two ommegang offerings may or may not be a bit difficult to find but you will very likely have to go to a liquor store to get them. if you find them, buy them and don't drink alone. Share the wealth because it's great stuff.

the spaten and paulaner, good stuff, should be right up your alley and it's cheap enough that you can drink them often unlike the ommegang stuff which varies from $8-$10/bottle and they generally come as 750ml which is about 2 beers each.

That Yellow Snow IPA is real different for an IPA. The beer is blonde (thus the name, I take it) and it doesn't have a real hoppy bite whatsoever. It's good though!

Dead Guy Ale is good stuff. Double Dead Guy though...hmmm...that's a sipping beer for sure. It's a doppelbock that is all sorts of heavily malted. It's good, but it's a slow drinker.

I don't want anything special. I just want them to be made of clear glass and nothing fancy. fancy glasses turn beer gay.

I love the description on the back of the Lost Abbey Inferno Ale bottle.

Corruption, Greed, and Lust. They're all represented on the hooks of today. Tomorrow, they'll be stinging Gluttony, Desire, and Sloth. Go ahead. Tell yourself you're better than all of them. But you can't. Hell can be funny like that. Down here it's all just sin. Everyone here is screwed just like you. They don't care who you sliced, diced, or cheated. No on is escaping this heinous place. Your roommate is an ax murderer. Eerily, he's not threatening. How can he be? Here, the Fallen Angel owns your body, mind and soul. As such, no one can take your life. It's already been taken. Or was it given? Neither matters. Did you seriously think you were living a virtuous life. At least Satan serves beer in Hell. He brews it himself right there in that flame stoked cauldron. Rumor has it the beer is straw yellow, bone dry and simply labeled Inferno.

sadly, no. I keep meaning to check bevmo for both the elder and the younger but I always forget.

The Younger is #1 on my list of beers I want to try. With any luck, I'll be going to San Fran for a week next September and I will hunt for it then, seeing how it's not available here in the East.

yeah, it was bad. like omfg where's the toilet sick. I drank the beer and about 35 minutes or so later I felt really sick. started sweating. got nauseated ran to the nearest toilet and upchucked. then I laid in bed all day. worst beer experience of my life. remember the episode of King of the Hill with the tainted Alamo beer? it's kinda like that.

wonder what caused it. beer germies can't make you sick. maybe the bottle wasn't rinsed correctly or something. sorry to hear that, though. being sick is never fun. this sounds like hell on wheels.

I wasn't happy about it. needless to say, I never touched it again and that was about 4 years ago.

We went here (http://www.marthas-exchange.com/) while I was visiting my mom last week. Awesome place. Highly recommend their chowdah.

All the beers were great.
Here's what we had on tap. Plus their cask conditioned ale was a pale ale brewed with home grown hops. So awesome.
Volstead '33--4.7%

This is the one beer we have available year round. It is also the only beer designed to be close to the mass marketed beers out there. It is a light golden ale. It is clean, refreshing and sprightly carbonated. Made almost entirely with 2-row pale malt, it is hopped with imported Hallertau. back to top

Golden Perch IPA--6.3%

Full of luscious hops from start to finish. A firm malt body backs it up. Breathe deep and let the hops dance through your head. Then drink your fill.

Old Dunstable Amber--5.4%

A seemlessly balanced brew with just enough malt and hops for every palate. It is very easy drinking and down to earth.

PumpkinWeizen--5.2%

Pumpkin and German style wheat beer meet for a new fall classic. Lightly spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg. Fresh and inviting and lovely.

Apathy's Reward--8.1%

A hodgepodge of malts and hops made on the spot on brewday, and then left to its own devices. Very very tasty for little effort and will!

MacLeod's Scotch Ale--8.7%

Full bodied and full of caramelized malt. Rich and smooth with a touch of scorched grain and sweet alcohol. Hides its potency dangerously well. Sip and enjoy this glass of heaven.

Dark Rosaleen Stout--5.5%

Don't be afraid of the dark. Smooth beyond belief with a creamy head that sticks around for the whole pint. Poured through a 'nitro' tap like its more famous Irish cousin. This one adds American flair to the taste and doesn't let go.

the apathy's reward is right up your alley. The food was awesome. If you're ever up that way, I highly recommend it. It wasn't that far from the Manchester airport which I flew out of instead of going into boston. :)

Interesting. Seems to be a love it or hate it brew based on the reviews that I have read. but there aren't many reviews. doesn't look like it is available in bottles either. something tells me that one day I will have to visit this place that they call New Hampshire.

You'd be surprised how often I hear this at the homebrew store. Glad to see you're getting into beer. It's worth it, if you give it half a chance. :)

the trick is to find beers that you like. not everybody likes the same stuff. Some people like high alcohol content and hoppy and bitter (the two kinda go hand in hand) while some people just like to keep things simple or more on the sweet side. I like the two extremes but I find myself drinking more high alcohol content beers than anything else. if I am going to kick back and just chill I drink simple beers but usually my beers go along with a meal and so I get things like strong ales, barleywines, IPAs, etc. Not a whole not in between but there are always exceptions to the rule.

I'm working on some DFH Immort Ale (http://www.dogfish.com/brewings/Occasional_Rarities/Immort_Ale/16/index.htm)

Vast in character, luscious & complex. Brewed with peat-smoked barley, this strong ale is brewed with organic juniper berries, vanilla & maple syrup. It's aged on oak and fermented with a blend of English & Belgian yeasts.

I've heard a lot of good things about Immort Ale. I can't get it here. I've tried. I can get some of their stuff but only a small selection.
