An American Crime premiers tonight on Showtime, with Ellen Page playing Sylvia Likens (Likens was tortured and killed in a basement in Indiana in 1965).
It is also on Showtime at other times. This should be harrowing, disturbing, and I expect Page to be superb.

I saw it last night. I give it a B at best.
An American Crime is very much “tamed down” from the case studies on the torture and death of Sylvia Likens. Ellen Page’s performance/role was good—it was not great. Her role was that of a supporting actress, imho. I would not recommend buying the dvd when it is available. Rent it instead if you have an interest in it and then buy it if you like it.
Page’s performance/role in Hard Candy is her finest perfomance thus far, imho (yes, including Juno).

Juno sucked. Although I blame Jason Reitman more than anyone. I still like Page.

imho, Page's performance in Hard Candy is riveting, intense, and brilliant. If you have not seen it, you might think about renting it.
I watched An American Crime again. I now give it, at best, a C. What a major disappointment...
I've not seen Juno yet.

seekerofvisions,
An American Crime was disappointing to me. Perhaps it was because I have read a couple of non-fiction books about what the sadistic witch—Gertrude Baniszewski—and her more-than-willing cohorts did to Sylvia (and to her sister, Jenny) in 1965 and the movie isn't accurate in its display of the sheer, raw terror of the actual events. The movie has been "tamed down" imho.
Purchase The Girl Next Door (2007), the DVD based upon Ketchum’s fictional account of those same events. It ain't "tamed down."
