TheLateGreat 04-16-2008, 08:43 PM Hillary Clinton On Southern Working Class Whites In 1995: "Screw 'Em" (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/16/hillary-clinton-on-workin_n_97017.html)
During the past week, Sen. Hillary Clinton has presented herself as a working class populist, the politician in touch with small town sentiments, compared to the elitism of her opponent, Sen. Barack Obama.
But a telling anecdote from her husband's administration shows Hillary Clinton's attitudes about the "lunch-bucket Democrats" are not exactly pristine.
In January 1995, as the Clintons were licking their wounds from the 1994 congressional elections, a debate emerged at a retreat at Camp David. Should the administration make overtures to working class white southerners who had all but forsaken the Democratic Party? The then-first lady took a less than inclusive approach.
"Screw 'em," she told her husband. "You don't owe them a thing, Bill. They're doing nothing for you; you don't have to do anything for them."
The statement -- which author Benjamin Barber witnessed and wrote about in his book, "The Truth of Power: Intellectual Affairs in the Clinton White House" -- was prompted by another speaker raising the difficulties of reaching "Reagan Democrats." It stands in stark contrast to the attitude the New York Democrat has recently taken on the campaign trail, in which she has presented herself as the one candidate who understands the working-class needs.
"I don't think [Obama] really gets it that people are looking for a president who stands up for you and not looks down on you," she said this week.
But those who were at the event say the 1995 episode fits into her larger viewpoint. As Harry Boyte, the director of the University of Minnesota's Center for Democracy and Citizenship who was at the retreat, told The Huffington Post: "[Hillary Clinton] sees herself as the champion of the oppressed, but there is always a kind of good guy versus bad guy mentality. The comment before that was that 'the Reagan Democrats are our enemies and they weren't on our side,' and she was agreeing with that comment. She said we should write them off: screw them."

I guess TT will be dropping his support of Hillary now. :(

Great find, TLG! :eek3:
Malcolm Wright 04-16-2008, 09:39 PM I guess TT will be dropping his support of Hillary now. :(
Good find TLG. I wonder how he's going to run from this one. I have the feeling he'll find a way.

Zordar 04-16-2008, 10:11 PM Awesome.
And strangely, just as I agreed with Obama, I agree with Hillary. But it's going to be fun watching her try to squirm out of this.

And strangely, just as I agreed with Obama, I agree with Hillary. But it's going to be fun watching her try to squirm out of this.
I doubt she'll have to squirm out of anything. A) It's old and stale ('95?), and B) There's no audio. The media won't pick this up and run with it like they insanely did with the bitter non-story.
I'm just mocking the idiocy of the "bitter" brou-haha here.
Zordar 04-16-2008, 11:31 PM Aww. Points A) and B) are indeed correct, but kind of sucky. I'm guilty of not reading the entire first post, and thinking this was breaking news (since I come to DA for all of my news updates).
Disappointing. Watching politicians tap-dance and backpedal makes for great entertainment. Oh well. Maybe we'll get TT instead.

vindex 04-17-2008, 08:19 AM More evidence that each of the three contenders is a big lying smirking douche. Remember brewster's millions? "none of the above."
Farnsworth,Luther P. 04-17-2008, 09:44 AM I don't see why this is news. The Democratic Party abandoned it's labor base over 30 years ago; that's why they have to pander to to ridiculously small special interest groups like 'The Gay Vote', some 2% of the population and a group that will vote overwhelmingly Republican on every other issue, and have a major effort going to allow illegal aliens to vote. Democrats have done even more than Republicans to gut the industrial base.
It's hilarious watching them and their idiot supporters guarantee a McCain victory, just as they guaranteed a Bush victory the last two Presidential elections.
Morons.
Malcolm Wright 04-17-2008, 04:54 PM More evidence that each of the three contenders is a big lying smirking douche. Remember brewster's millions? "none of the above."
"Big lying smirking douche"... That's some characterization there...
It is further proof to me that you are prejudiced against them all by principle and not on their individual lack of merit.
The only presidential politician I know that smirks is Bush, and he's not running.
As for lying, Hillary is the only one I've seen caught in a lie. Obama and McCain have not, AFAIK.
As for douche, you're just showing your animosity for politics in general. The character of Obama and McCain cannot be defined by that word. They have both given honorable service to the people of this country, and AFAIK, accomplished far more in their lives, and been of aid to more people, than you have. Who are you to call them 'douches'? The same goes for Hillary, although her character makes me loathe to defend her from any insult.

1.I'm not from the South,so I'm not insulted.:p
2.It was 14 years ago,it was an off the cuff remark made in private and she was not a canidate.
3.There is dispute as to what actually was said and no independent verification of anything.
4.Obama was retarded enough to say what he did in public with tape recorders and cameras rolling.
Malcolm Wright 04-17-2008, 07:04 PM 1.I'm not from the South,so I'm not insulted.:p
I suppose the south isn't part of the US and Southerners aren't Americans? You knock Obama for disrespect that is in fact hype, but here you are disrespecting almost half the population of the country.
2.It was 14 years ago,it was an off the cuff remark made in private and she was not a canidate.
Hehe: what difference does that make - it still tells us what kind of person she is. The twist you want to put on Obama's words is NOTHING compared to the disdain she expresses.
3.There is dispute as to what actually was said and no independent verification of anything.
Plenty of verification - all that were present recall her saying something to that effect. There just has not been precise recollection of the wording, which is to be expected.
4.Obama was retarded enough to say what he did in public with tape recorders and cameras rolling.
Retarded? It seems half the country sees nothing wrong with what he said, and considers the twisting of his words to be manipulative hype... But if Obama was retarded to say what he said, what was hillary for lying repeatedly on national television about being shot at in Bosnia? Answer me that?
You tell people they are biased all day long.. how about you work on yourself a little?
M.

It's not where I come from [though I have lived there] ,so it isn't personal to me.
Hehe: what difference does that make - it still tells us what kind of person she is.
It might have told us what kind of person she was in 1996[ it might not either, off the cuff remarks sometimes mean nothing],but not in 2008,while Obama did say what he said in 2008.
By the way,I felt the same way in 1996 too,I don't feel that way today.
Plenty of verification - all that were present recall her saying something to that effect. There just has not been precise recollection of the wording, which is to be expected.
There is nothing that can used to swift boat her.
Obama's audio tape and video tape can be used to swift boat him.

I don't care about Bosnia because what she said about Bosnia has no imapct on my life.
Obama's gaffe could cost the Democrats votes, that does have imapct on my life.
You tell people they are biased all day long..
Because they are biased but don't have the balls to admit it.
how about you work on yourself a little?
When did I say I wasn't biased?
Damn right I am biased,I have the balls to admit that too.
You and the other Obamamaniacs don't have the balls to admit that about yourselfs though.:p
Feenix566 04-18-2008, 10:37 AM Malcolm and TLG, I sure hope you're finding some entertainment in watching TT find ways to rationalize everything. I also hope you're not expecting him to ever change his tune.
As for the issue at hand, I'll give the same exact response to it that I gave to Obama's comments. Who cares? It's a ridiculous non-issue. What really matters are policy positions, and nobody in this campaign even bothers to mention them.
But the overall point of my post is this: I bet Hillary's foot tastes really, really bad. But if she's still flexible enough to get it into her mouth at her age, I have a little bit of newfound respect for her.
Truth Teller 04-18-2008, 05:46 PM Malcolm and TLG, I sure hope you're finding some entertainment in watching TT find ways to rationalize everything.
It's called using one's intellect,my detractors ought to try doing that someday .:p
I also hope you're not expecting him to ever change his tune.
I don't expect you to ever change yours,so why should you do likewise?

And you think Hillary's lies aren't going to cost the Democrats votes? You're completely delusional.
The thing about manipulating Obama's words is that there is plenty of room for people to either perceive the deception, or at least doubt the intent of the words.
With Hillary, there isn't a millimeter of wriggle room either side of her elephant-sized fib. Try applying the same ruler to both candidates. You might actually buy back some respect for your bankrupt position.

It is entertaining, although TT thinks it is mean-spirited to say so. I just call it making the most out of a sad situation. Better laugh than cry, right? :nice:
M.
Truth Teller 04-19-2008, 01:00 PM And you think Hillary's lies aren't going to cost the Democrats votes?
No.
You're completely delusional.
Back that opinion up.
Most voters don't even know where Bosina is,let alone give a shit about some minor misspeak invovling it.
The thing about manipulating Obama's words is that there is plenty of room for people to either perceive the deception, or at least doubt the intent of the words.
Most people do not care what is said about Bosina, they do care about what is said about them and their values [be their interpertation correct or incorrect].
I'm out to win elections for Democrats period, you're only out for Obama.
Truth Teller 04-19-2008, 01:44 PM There are now rumors that Obama is pro-Hamas.
Farnsworth,Luther P. 04-19-2008, 02:11 PM There are now rumors that Obama is pro-Hamas.
No longer a rumor. His stock just shot way up with the local antisemites who avidly support Arab gangsters using children as human shields and oppose the security fence because it drastically reduced their ability to murder civilians.

Well,I haven't seen any proof that he is pro-Hamas.
But, I have heard rumors about that and these are the rumors that I've most feared about him.
If they are true, then the Republican will win in a landslide.
Farnsworth,Luther P. 04-19-2008, 04:11 PM Hard to hide two or three decades of photos and news stories. I'm sure there are several file cabinets of even more unsavory 'fund raising' just waiting to happen.
antiquity 04-19-2008, 04:17 PM Most voters don't even know where Bosina is,let alone give a shit about some minor misspeak invovling it.
Most Americans don't even know where Kansas is and don't give a shit one way or the other. So what's your point?
About her misspeak about bullets flying over her head in Bosina, what about her claiming she was on the high school soccer team and she was named after Sir Hillary, or the part of her speeches where she said a women died in child birth because she had no insurance. You don't see a pattern of lies on her part? Every time I see her telling us about some experience she has had in her past, the first thing I think is, 'is she lying again?' So yes people do know her past and are concerned about it.
igofast 04-19-2008, 04:30 PM "I'm not from the south, so I don't care if she insults southerners." Thanks for the laugh.
Malcolm Wright 04-19-2008, 08:23 PM There are only two people on this entire board, that I can tell, who don't care about Hillary's lies. The rest of us feel it is a trait we cannot reward with our vote.
And yet TT has the temerity to claim Hillary's lies will not cost votes.
I'm too kind to you TT.

I don't know of any average person who talks about this, only neocons and Obama fanatics.
"I'm not from the south, so I don't care if she insults southerners."
You should take away the quotation marks because there is no record of my saying that.

It was not a direct quote, no. Here's your quote:

The insinuation is that it is not relevant to you if she insults the south. My quote was not exact, but my point stands.
Snouter 04-20-2008, 06:16 PM I am seriously considering reporting igofast for the implications inherent in this exchange of post with Truth Tormentor.
