You should try making wine. It's uber fun and easy. I have accumulated quite a collection of italian varietals. All reds, though. That's all I really like.

Although I am aware of the mechanics of prison wine, I was referring to the purchasing of wine juice kits from your local home brew supplier and making it yourself, ya bum.

Rose with an accent on the e. I don't feel like figuring out how to get the accent there.

Basically the rule with wine is, if you like it, it's a good wine. There are so many variables, you usually wouldn't say something general like "I hate cabs!" Some cabs are (relatively) light and fruity, others are heavy and oakie. Just start with inexpensive wines, try to pay attention to who made it, where it's from, and what it's vintage is. See what you like, and start learning from there.

Vintage charts can be helpful, but again, not an end-all-be-all:

You can also start to familiarize yourself with the difference between regional and varietal wines. Most "new world" wines (basically non-european) are varietal. The label will tell you which grape was used to create the wine, like Merlot, Cabernet, Chardonnay, etc. California wines have to be made from at least 75% of the grape on the label, I'm not sure of other areas, but I imagine more strict guidelines exist. Old world wines (mostly Europe) are mostly regional, such as Bordeaux, Burgandy, and Chianti. These can be a mix of several grapes, for example, Bordeaux is created using any mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a couple other grapes.

Champagne that isn't produced in Champagne, France should be labeled as sparkling wine, not Champagne, although many producers have been breaking that rule.

I'm drinking sake right now. Most people call it rice wine, but the process is actually closer to beer than wine.

(As I understand, I've never actually made wine or sake)

which reminds me, that i was gonna look into whats good sake, in japan, wasnt i?
just left japan 4 days ago, i didnt do it... :( sorry..

but what i understand, sake is very much a local affair in japan, there are thousants, every town has tehir own. and there are stronger varieties too, which arent called sake, but something else.

I'm not a huge wine fan, except for cooking, but there is a local vineyard that does a wonderful Chard, not too oaky, but nice and buttery. There are a couple of Australian Reds that are nice with beef.
