This movie will be incredible because it did happen in Indiana in 1960s--it is a true story--and because Ellen Page (Hard Candy, etc.) will be Sylvia Likens and Page is brilliant.

An American Crime:

An American Crime (also known as The Basement) is a 2007 film based on the true story of the torture and murder of Sylvia Likens by Indianapolis housewife Gertrude Baniszewski. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January to controversy amongst the critics, most of whom, nonetheless, lauded the daring performances of Catherine Keener and, especially, Ellen Page.[1] The film will officially premiere on the US cable network, Showtime, in 2008.[2]

The movie is based on these true yet almost indescribable events:

Gertrude Baniszewski (née van Fossan) (1929 – June 16, 1990), also known as Gertrude Wright and Nadine van Fossan, was an Indiana divorcee who, with the aid of some of her own children and neighborhood children such as Ricky Hobbs and Coy Hubbard, oversaw and facilitated the prolonged torture, mutilation, and eventual murder of Sylvia Likens, a teenage girl she had taken into her home. When she was convicted of first-degree murder in 1966, the case was called "the single worst crime perpetrated against an individual in Indiana's history".

An American Crime is going to be difficult to watch yet perhaps more difficult not to watch.

After reading the script Page said, “I was just blown away and could hardly believe it was a true story. It splintered my heart.”

It is going to be harrowing, disturbing movie. Almost 10 people tortured or physically abused Sylvia Likens before she died in Indianapolis in 1965.

The same horrors inflicted upon her are no doubt still occurring in the USA today.

It still boggles my mind at how many people are so cruel to other humans.
