I'm in the mood for a gin based beverage. What's a good one to get? Not looking to spend a lot. Also, what's the best way to mix it up? Gin & tonic?

:P Of course you picked the one liquor I don't like. If I did though, you really can't go wrong with a well-made classic martini.

GIN AND JUICE BEEYOTCHES

I like Gin and Tonic. If you wanna get fancy, you could make a Tom Collins. Don't ask me what the real recipe is, though. I just use the Tom Collins mix :P

Either way, make sure you squirt some lime juice into it. It doesn't taste the same without it.

Tom Collins:

1&1/4 oz gin.
Juice from 1 lemon.
Dash of simple syrup. (sugar or liquid honey will do in a pinch)
3 oz Club Soda (use 7up if you want it sweeter)

Shake the first three ingredients vigorously with ice and pour into a tumbler. Top with soda and garnish with orange wheel.

If you want that professional frothy look add a little egg white before you shake.

If you're making gin cocktails you should probably pick up some Angostura bitters as it's featured in many of them.

Honolulu:

2 oz gin.
1/2 oz pineapple juice.
1/2 oz OJ.
1/4 oz lemon juice.
Dash of simple syrup.
Dash of angostura.

Chill a martini glass and sugar rim it. Shake all ingredients with ice and strain. Garnish with lemon peel.

hey kernel, I hate recipes that need simple syrup. I know it's just melted sugar, but really, who has the time to make simple syrup while making drinks at home?!

legless? Is that like drunk, or something?

p.s. I bought a small dealie of bombay sapphire. no club soda so I'm SOL for today. Will attempt some of these tomorrow after another stop at the liquor store. :P

I can do that. Can't that bruise the booze though? Something I've never really understood, bruising liquid.

That refers to bruising the gin in a martini. I stir mine because I think shaking a martini actually does affect the taste.

Any other booze is fair game as far as I'm aware.

Well then I guess it's good that I prefer mine with vodka. But it does bother me when someone orders a martini and then exclaims, "what is this? I didn't ask for gin!" (I don't know if that happens all that often outside of LA)

It happens everywhere.

Try being the guy who took the time to make a perfect martini in the middle of a busy shift just to have some asshat send it back. :shakefist:shakefist:shakefist

Ice, yes. vermouth, no. I've had martinis before, but with vodka.

:nice: what's a gimlet? :hmm:

colonel

Gimlet:

2 & 1/2 oz gin.
1/2 oz Roses preserved lime juice.

Shake with ice and strain. Garnish with lime wedge.

If you use fresh lime and sugar it's more like a Gin Rickey.

Martinis are ok if you like a good strong belt. Otherwise gin and tonic.

Martini= gin + white vermouth and olive.
sweet martini = gin + sweet vermouth.
Gibson = Gin + White Vermouth and pickled onion.
Gin and Tonic = uh... gin + tonic.

Me? I prefer scotch.
