so, I think I want to use a couple of PC cooling fans to cool my car audio amps in the trunk of my car .... been looking at 3 and 4 wire 80mm and 120mm fans ... got a couple questions ....

What do the wires do .... what are the color schemes typically and why are there more then 2 wires .... the three wire fan I notice has red/black/yellow wires ... how would i need to hook them up to spin the fan at 100%?

If the neegahs are overheating, sounds like a symptom to an underlying problem like a wiring issue or other incompatibility between the amp/battery/speakers.

It's wired straight-up ... wire from batt to breaker under hood, from breaker to dist block in trunk, one wire from dist block to little amp, one wire from dist block to 1f capacitor, from capicitor to amp. Amp is Alpine v12 mrv-1002 wired up to two JL Audio 10w3v2d4 (dual 4ohm coils per speaker) wired Series / Parallel amp sees 4ohms ... all text book wiring all grounds (from the cap, the little amp, and the big amp) are solid and as short as possible. (not saying I think I know everything, but I went to school for electronic engineering and have wired several other systems w/ no problem / issues) ... the amp is mounted to the back of thhe box and its installed up against the vert top holder thing (up against the back seat for all that matters)... i think it just does not get the air it needs ... its a tiny trunk to begin with and all that stuff adds heat and no good air movement back there across the amp.

It would be interesting to see if it is within the recommended heat levels after it is run hard. My limited experience with fans is that they introduce audio noise and static type noise into the system but apparently they make fans for hot amps nowadays. Apparently the third wire (probably yellow) in the PC fans is for a fan speed sensor (black ground of course, red probably power) which should not affect performance if disconnected I would hope. One of those things you just have to experiment with I guess.
