Achem... so you guys are car savvy... whats the problem sound like to you? And know a solution?

My car was having slight (I think) transmission problems... Basically I would give it gas but it wouldnt go till the RPMs hit like 3000... anyways I got back from being gone for a week and a half... and everything SEEMED ok...

Then recently Ive realized the following

1) The car wont go in reverse... if I give it gas it lurches a little but doesnt move and I hear things spinning... keep it up and I smell burning...

2) In neutral... the car goes forward... just like one of the drive gears... very disturbing... at first it just wouldnt move forward or back... now it actually goes forward.

3) In overdrive I get to about 35-40 miles an hour and then the car lurches into what feels like a lower gear and the engine starts to drag...the only thing I can do is drop into Drive and drive it and just suffer in Gas and RPMs...

Anyone got any clue whats wrong and what itll take to fix?

It sounds like all your bands are screwed up.
The thing seems to be puttering to it's death. You probably need a complete rebuild. From the *sounds* of it.

The burning smell sounds like you're out of fluid.

Hope that was of some help.

Hey Nathan, long time. Anyhow, fool, you got a manual or an automatic?

What kind of tranny? if the is an auto, do NOT drive it like this! It could be as simple as needing more fluid. Check it with the motor on and add if needed. After burning the fluid like that you will want to have the fluid changed ASAP too. Hopefully you didnt do what Christina said yet.

When I put my shift kit in, I didnt put enough fluid in. I had simular issues Except at 3000 RPMs in the stang, when the power did kick in to the wheels, it was like being kicked by a mule and all holly hell would break loose. I would leave 2 fat black snakey lines and hold on for dear life! It was like having a poor mans stall converter, I liked it! http://discussanything.com/Ubb/biggrin.gif

My mom has a 95 T-Bird 4.6v8 with the AODE Trans.

He car was making a weird noise at 30k miles, we researched the problem and found that the cause is the torque converter (the Lincoln dealer told us) ..... In her transmission, all the fluid must be changed at 30kmile intervals otherwise screwy things happen, it's a problem ford knows about (and knew about when thy sold the car). There is a plug on the converter to allow you to drain the fluid in it (this is not normal, most torque converters do not have the drain plug).

Try changing the fluid.

Actually alot of Ford torque convertors DO have that drain plug, but it's pretty much unique to them by my understanding.

There's another, less messy way to change the fluid too. Alot of quick lube places have Trans Flush machines that tie into the cooler lines. They're advertised to completely flush the tranny, but in my experience they get about 90%. That still leaves the filter and gasket to deal with too though. http://discussanything.com/Ubb/frown.gif Never mind rather or not you trust a quick lube place with your tranny lines http://discussanything.com/Ubb/smile.gif
