View Full Version : Pot Luck
Saison 12-12-2007, 04:14 PM So, our department has a pot luck lunch every year around the holidays. I was supposed to make something, but I simply don't have the time to be messing around with recipes and things. I bought two containers of yummy soup from my favorite sandwich shop instead of cooking. Meh, it's a cop out, I know.
Anyway, what are your favorite things to make for pot lucks? I usually make vegetarian stuffed mushrooms with spinache and cheese.
Dreamintree01 12-12-2007, 04:18 PM I like to make pineapple casserole b/c it's super yummy. I make a lot of different things, though, because I like to try out new recipes.
Monster 12-12-2007, 04:25 PM I'll generally just make pasta and my cheese sauce. Or I'll be lazy and do an onion dip and bring a bag of chips. :p
Shadoglare 12-12-2007, 04:30 PM I used to bring in pickle rolls that always seemed to go over really well, but after a few times (especially in my last office that had pot lucks basically monthly) I decided I was tired of shelling out like $8 worth of ingrediants and a good couple hours of my time fixing the things to end up usually nibbling on like $1 worth of snack food.
Just not a pot luck fan and I also get a little annoyed at how it's basically strongly implied that participating is required unless you want to be shunned by all your coworkers :P

Yeah, true. Although they said, if you want to eat, you gotta bring SOMETHING. Twelve people must have signed up to bring "paper products."

What kind of cheese sauce? Sounds yummy.
berdache 12-12-2007, 05:13 PM I used to make a big pot of muligatawny soup.... toasting the spices and then grinding them, cooking and boning the chicken, etc. It took a few hours to make correctly. Until one loudmouth got everyone all scared about 'catching AIDS' from eating the hot soup. Pissed me off that people could be so ignorant! First, one would have to be HIV+ to be a 'threat' and second, the virus can't live outside the human body. Stopped participating in their bullshit dinner for about 6 years. When most of the ignorant ****s had moved to other departments or retired, been fired/quit; I started making cheesecakes, usually 2... Haven't had a complaint since, and NEVER have any leftovers.
Only thing frustrating the people now is that I don't make the same cake twice... one woman in particular pleads for the pumpkin cheesecake with maple sugar and syrup drizzled. But have many different ones to try.
DngrMse 12-12-2007, 05:32 PM Pork and bean soup in the crockpot. Ingredients: Pork, beans, water, salt and pepper to taste. It does'nt get much easier than that.

WTF? Do these people arrive at work on the short bus?:eek3:
I only do pot luck with friends and a lot of my friends are either chefs or just really good cooks so it's always worth the effort.
My "go to" dish is cannelloni stuffed with spinach and feta, baked in tomato sauce. I call it spanakalloni.

I'm still around. Good to hear from you again! How's things in Toronto?
colonel 12-12-2007, 07:20 PM Snowy and cold as you might expect but all in all...pretty damn good.

It's going to get snowy here...there's this "superstorm" forming, and it's supposed to be bringing a bumper crop of snow, and some blizzard-like winds too. Me and the snow don't get along very well. It's pretty enough...through a window, or on tv, but face to face, it's just too damn cold.
Nice appetizer: Slice some ham medium thin, spread a little cream cheese on the slices and roll them up with green onion in the middle.
YUMMY!

Gibson 12-12-2007, 09:12 PM Waikiki meatballs are always a hit
ATBlythe2000 12-14-2007, 08:46 PM pot luck... a.k.a. pad lock... a.k.a. food exchange. * i usually make a $1 cake or double deck it. like mine at work; I tell everyone to bring food or drink- pastic and paper products don't count

One place I worked at made it a rule that paper products, soda, and chips could only be brought by those who don't normally drive to work. That might be something to consider in the future to cut that number down.
Of course, this isn't going to work if your place of employment is in some industrial park that's not public transportation accessable.
colonel 12-16-2007, 09:32 AM If someone is a terrible cook perhaps the paper plates would be a good idea.
