what i'm getting at though is when an ethnicity is emphasized-look there are other inputs besides german in my family but germany was the critical thing-we speak german and act and think german-my blacks i know have some white blood in them but theyre black-they dont want to lose their identity

A person's ethnic heritage is an important part of who they are, and can be a source of individual confidence. There's no reason to be ashamed of it, be proud of and celebrate it! I'm of 100% Hungarian background, and even though I never learned to speak that language fluently, just knowing my cultural roots has helped me to feel a little more "centered", as far as my own background. I've never felt isolated, because I have a rich cultural history to draw upon, as do most of the people now living in the US, if they'd only feel comfortable in acknowledging that fact.
The only problem is when we begin to think that any one ethnic background is superior to any other.

It's okay, I'm used to it. And, I have been to Germany. Some of my family comes from Germany, so I'm German. Also, my mother lived there for a period in her twenties and said it was the happiest time of her life. :)
