View Full Version : Getting a new lappy
Evil Elmo 11-11-2007, 11:55 AM Getting a new lappy tomorrow. Unfortunately I can't seem to find anything that comes with XP that I like so I am stuck with Vista. which is OK by me since it is going to be mainly for work and not pleasure.
In light of mine and Betty's experience with fujitsu (:nice:) I am going to get a fujitsu.

I know I know it's intel. I do loathe intel (:not:) but I will settle to get what I want.
PlatyGuy 11-11-2007, 12:40 PM I'm not an Intel fan either, but the fact is that the Core 2 chips are the best thing out there right now for laptops. Just in case you ever plan to run Linux on this thing, BTW, and assuming you have an option, make sure you get an NVidia video card rather than an ATI. It's also worth checking which other components - especially wireless chips - are in it, for the same reasons. There are sites out there devoted to tracking the Linux compatibility of various components, but I don't remember the URLs off the top of my head. Even if you're 99.999% certain that you'll only ever want to run Windows on it, it might make it easier to resell or exchange a couple of years down the road if it has the "preferred" bits in it, and it costs you absolutely nothing in terms of Windows compatibility or performance.
Evil Elmo 11-11-2007, 01:05 PM this one is pretty much all intel. I can't seem to find a suitable laptop with nvidia graphics at a reasonable price. but linux is going to be installed if it is possible. but I am being very picky with this setup. I have a brand that is not optional (narrows my choices a lot) and it needs to at least be a desktop replacement and do it at a reasonable price. The benefit of nvidia linux compatibility would be nice. it's going to be one helluva job confirming all compatibility on this but I am working on it.
Evil Elmo 11-11-2007, 01:16 PM everything that I can gather says that Linux should not be a problem. :nice:
there is one key part that I can't gather any information on which would be the SATA controller but if that is a problem it just won't install. I think I will be ok though. I have only run into that issue a couple times but then I have never put linux on a lappy.
I bought a 14.1 widescreen T61 from Lenovo about 6 months ago. It was 1400 bucks. Came with a 128MB built in Nvidia card, 2.0 Core 2 Duo, 1GB of ram, 160GB hard drive, DL DVD burner, Intel Turbo Memory, vista premium.
You may want to check out the T61s...
Why are you guys not intel fans? Sour from the whole P4 fiasco?
Evil Elmo 11-11-2007, 02:27 PM I find intel's past business practices (there was an article involving threats to manufacturers at one time) to be disgusting and I find their lack of creativity in their architecture to be a sign of weakness. they really are not performers in the intensive applications area by a long shot and that is where you need the performance boost....in intensive apps....not word and excel. On the upside they offer lower power consumption in laptops and greater linux compatibility in their other products.
now before somebody starts saying that the benchmarks are lopsided and unreliable. Take into account the number of benchmarks performed and their results and then come up with the winner based on an average favoring the intensive applications and that's pretty solid evidence that AMD butt rapes intel in the performance department.
I do stand by intel's low power consumption and overall compatibility with linux. I just wish that AMD could say the same in that area.

For me it's mostly an aesthetic thing. I blame Intel for the "clock speed is everything" mindset that set the CPU- and system-design world back at least two or three years. I work with some of the best CPU architects in the world, and they have convinced me that high clock rates and huge caches (which just cover up the CPU/memory mismatch) were a huge mistake. Multi-core systems with smaller caches and more/wider memory channels should have become mainstream years ago. Instead, Intel led the charge toward the high-clock-rate big-cache "junk food" of computing, and where Intel provided instant gratification others like AMD were forced to follow. Opterons are still the processors of choice for enterprise and supercomputer work, and for good reason, though it's hard to explain that to people who just see that Intel processors dominate the benchmarks for personal-computing workloads. There are other reasons I dislike Intel (mostly having to do with the Rambus/DDR and USB/Firewire wars), and in some ways I guess I should thank them for leaving the door open to competitors in some markets, but their effect on CPU design is the big one.
Evil Elmo 11-11-2007, 03:36 PM that is certainly a much more elaborate way to explain crappy architecture. good job platy. *claps*

Very good explaination!

Cool. Which version did you end up installing? I'm still running Kubuntu Edgy, because stuff works now and I don't feel any need to change, but it did take a fair bit of tweaking and I've heard Gutsy's a lot better. I'll probably upgrade when Hardy comes out, just because it's the next LTS release and will thus get even more focus on stability and usability instead of geeky niftiness.

I used Xubuntu Gutsy Gibbon and was amazed that there was zero extra config. every linux install I have ever done had at least a little tweaking, this time, nothin. Of course that was kinda the whole idea in choosing this lappy, but I didn't expect it to come out so well.
PlatyGuy 12-10-2007, 10:17 AM Excellent. :nice: I run Xubuntu on my desktop at home, which I only use like once a week or so, so I've never really formed a strong opinion about XFCE vs. KDE. It's cool to see that others are using Linux on laptops without enormous pain. BTW, next time you post a pic make sure you close all those porn-site windows first.
Made ya look.
