View Full Version : Finally got a GTECH
Snouter 07-19-2001, 12:03 AM It measures 0-60, 1/4 mile, 60-0, lateral G force, and HP. Overpriced little piece of plastic, but it is safer than doing 0-60 runs (on a level on ramp to a highway) with a stop watch and eyeballing the speedometer. It is a nice tool to see if certain mods actually improve performance.
I got a 6.36 seconds on a 0-60 run. The car is an 86 Capri 5.0 and has the original crappy heads and intake and the clumsy old AOD (post 86 heads and intake are much better - got to upgrade someday http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif ). I hope to do the 1/4 in 14.8.
Currently the only ignition enhancer is the Jacobs Ultra Coil, MSD 8.5 Super conductors and plugs gapped at .065". My Jacobs mileage master went bad and still have not replaced it. (I sent back a Jacobs Pro Street that was defective.)
Wow awesome!
How much do those run?
How does it 'hook' in...

I think my 0-60 times is around 12 seconds if i hit the redline going thru the gears....

Oh gawd!!!
Snouter 07-21-2001, 04:47 PM The price is $139.99 plus shipping from GTECH itself or resellers like Summit. The one they sent me is defective and doesn't give the horsepower, so I am sending this one back for an exchange. The hookup is very easy. It comes with a cheap plastic bracket that has velcro for the GTECH and a suction cup for the windshield. Center it and then align it up level. (It gives a readout to help get the unit level within its ability to read your acceleration or deceleration.)
To do the Continuous G's you have to find an empty parking lot and drive in a circle for 3 seconds.
I had one.. it was my old roomies.. I had no use for it so I gave it away (after I finished using it of course) You need your exact weight to get an "accurate" reading. I weighed my truck, figured the weight with me and ran a few times. Got a best of 15.49 @ 92mph. I was told they read about 3mph fast. It is a neat toy. Wish I had it back, now that I have a Stang to play with!
On the DML (Dakota Mailing List) we have one that gets passed around.. cost you 5 bux plus shipping to the next person on the list. When they get enuf money, they buy another one.

That's because at race tracks the mph is an average of the last 100 or so feet (the traps), while the G-Tech is the raw speed on the 1,320nd foot... or vice versa.

Snouter 08-02-2001, 05:13 PM Took 8 working days to get an exchange from Summit for the G-Tech. I am pleased. Now got to find a quiet parking lot where I can drive around in a circle real fast to get a corning G reading. http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif
Fordman50 08-02-2001, 05:16 PM I like that pass around idea. Snout, you gonna send it down to me for a week when your done? http://discussanything.com/Ubb/biggrin.gif

Snouter 08-04-2001, 01:58 AM Just kidding ya. The UPS shipping charges suck though and you really need one long term as a tool to see if certain mods make any real world improvement.
Snouter 08-14-2001, 12:50 PM Have to find a quiet time on the highway to safely do the 1/4 mile.
First one was 14.81 sec @ 99.6 MPH.
I am very happy with that, but it is without the ignition amplifier so I should be able to improve on it. (I returned the Jacobs Pro 8 and am waiting for a Jacobs ?Mileage Master.)
This is starting the old stock 1986 engine at idle (600 RPM) and using the AOD (B&M shift kit) with 3.73 rear gears.
Snouter 08-14-2001, 11:49 PM Thanks Manu. I hope it inspires people with 87's and up. Those have much better intakes and heads.
The "to do someday" list includes:
87 heads (hopefully free)
Cobra intake ($400)
A used 5 speed or Lentech tranny ($1,000 - 2,000...ouch)
Those should take it to the 13's I think. That is if the car doesn't rust away first. http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif
Wow that is a good number!

Fordman50 08-15-2001, 07:28 AM That MPH sound a little high for 14.8s. Are you have traction problems? I pull 14.4s @ 96 with stock heads/block and an AODE with 373s I do have 1.7 RRs and a cobra intake. My car is about 3700 pounds too!

Snouter 08-15-2001, 09:43 AM From what I hear, the GTECH is about 3-5 MPH faster than a track time because it shows actual speed not an average at the end. On that run, I spun a little as soon as I hit the gas at the start.
Snouter 08-26-2001, 12:56 PM Reinstalled an old Jacobs ignition computer pak. Today dry weather and no tire slippage at start and held 1st until 5000 RPM per stock tach and came up with a 14.2 @ 106.6. 0-60 was 6.66 (kind of slow), but the number of the beast. http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif

No tire slipage? that still doesnt seem right. Do you have an AOD? Do you have tall tires? Is your speedo gear right for those gears? I suspect not. At 106, you should be in the 13.6 range. !4.2 sould be closer to 98 or so. I dunno. Did you see and improvement with the Jacups?

Snouter 08-27-2001, 09:13 AM I highly recommend the Jacobs (never tried the MSD computer) because it makes the engine very strong, especially in the upper RPMs, this I have no doubt about. Even when cruising slow, without the Jacobs the gas pedal feels mushy, like a regular car. http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif It is a great investment for your car because it gives better mileage and the engine will be happier fully burning the mixture in the cumbustion chamber. Buy from Summit and you have 30 days to try I think.
I did the run at the same location so at least for copmparison it is useful.
Yes, it is an AOD with POS B&M shift kit. As I said, I started in 1, floored it and then shifted to D at 5K.
I use Firehawk sz50's 225/60/15 (stock size) which grip extremely well in the summer.
Keep in mind although my speedometer does read well past its 85 limit before the 1/4 is done, the GTECH measures purely with its own system which is completely independent of the car's speedometer.
I will try again today.
Snouter 08-27-2001, 12:23 PM Just did a 14.5 @ 91 but I let up on the gas well before the 1/4 for safety reasons. You can check my mods on Stangnet. Again, I think the most significant mods are with the 3.73 rear axle, Jacobs Computer + Ultra Coil, MSD wires, plugs gapped .070 and indexed open side toward intake valve, and March Ram Air, the car continues to pull strong all the way through the 1/4. Car weighs 3225 by itself with 1/2 tank gas.
I would think most post 86 cars could do better with the same mods. This means you too Ian! http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif
I will try on a different car to see if I get a number I would expect.
Snouter 09-05-2001, 02:41 PM Today I did a 15.2 @ 95.2 which sucks, but I had driven on the highway about 10 miles at 65 MPH, pulled into a rest stop and went for it when traffic was clear without letting the engine cool at all. Tires spun a little at the start. I am going to advance the timing from 14' to 16' and see what happens and regap the plugs to .070".
Wowl you're getting some nice numbers from the car!
The 106 does seem high, but with the over rating of the gtech, it is prolly more like 102-103...still high for a 14.2 pull...
That is interesting. Either smething is off, or you can get some better ETs witha t rap like that.
