I am giving heavy consideration to purcashing one. A nice 5.8 or 5.0. Anyone ever own one of these? Opinions?

I'm curious about the car as a whole. I haven't had a chance to test drive one yet, as I've just had this impulsive idea to want one for a couple of weeks. http://discussanything.com/Ubb/biggrin.gif

The mechanics don't scare me *too* much; I put my 302 shortblock together and am familiar with the mechanics of the engine. I can also come across parts pretty cheap if were something where to go wrong.

Any opinions?

I love those things. My dad has one with the 250 6 cyl. It had plenty of power but he did have some bif fuel injection problems too.

He never takes the top off either, If I had one, I would get one of those convertable top kits that they sell in JC Whitney. If you going to ever do any towing, you will want the Auto tranny too. The stick is not rates well for towing and the the clutches fail easily the a light load. However, for gas milage, I would go with the 250 or 302 and a stick (if I didnt have a boat) The 302 will not feel quick like in a light stang though. For that you will need a 5.8. The 5.8 get terrible gas millage and I wouldnt get it (12 MPG tops)

I would also put a 3 inch body lift on it like I had on my last 4x4! schwing! http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif BTW, watch for rust in the tail gates, that is a prob on those things

But for creatures of lesser intelligence, the word EMPATHY can be a hard word to roll off the lips.

I wonder how difficult it would be to fit a diesel engine into the Bronco's engine bay? It would be ideal for gas mileage and towing.

Just a pipe dream kinda 'project'.

My husband's Mustang has a 351 in it and he tweaked it a bit with the autologic chip, it improved his gas mileage, I think he mentioned from 13mpg or so to 17mpg. Almost what my 5.0 Explorer gets.

The Bronco 'looks' like a more fun vehicle, and I would definately drive it around topless, it would be blasphemy not to!

I have seen a few Bronco 5.0s going for about $6500. Pretty nice ones too!

Thanks for the input!

Got a 94XLT with the 5.0
Its nice, roomy, doesnt have all the fancy gimmicks all the new Sport Utilitys have but I like it.
As far as power, well its OK, good enough most of the time, but on a drive to Vegas where you have to pass on a 2 lane road, its not the greatest.

Im sure you could fit a deisel in there, or definetly a 351, their is a ton of room.

I assume it is the same 5.0 in the 2001 Explorers?

I ask because that is what I currently own, and the pick up isn't horrible.

Wow, thats a shocker. I thought for sure theyd be slapping the smaller V* in those, for fuel economy and such. Well, you learn something new every day!

Anyhoo, I would imagine that 5.0 is a little more advanced and refined than mine, wouldnt it?

The new 2002 Explorers strictly have the V* 4.6s - as some of the previous years, but there was still the 5.0 option pre '02.

I have heard good and bad on part of the modular motor. I am sure many of the issues have been or will be addressed. Very soon old 302 blocks will be very hard to find! Good thing I saved one from sitting under a tree for the rest of it's life http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif
