What is up with the status cars? Anyone here have an overwhelming need to spent way too much on an imported car that says, "look at me, I have money"? I feel that these penis cars are a complete waste of money and that most people who drive them really cant afford them anyway. Sure, anyone with a job can buy one but they wont be maxing out their 401k by any means. I just find them obscene.

But if you can afford it why not?

I mean you drive a big fast muscle car. Why? You know NEED one. Why not drive a focus or a civic?

It's annoying to see an old lady driving an NSX... I saw that the other day, http://discussanything.com/Ubb/mad.gif.
But hey, I'll admit it, if I had the money I'd get one too. They're fast cars, and they handle well. Sounds like a joy to drive..

What is a status car nowadays? Around here in Yuppieville, USA, I think there is a lot of confusion and the usual brainwashing. The soccer mom's get the expensive SUV so they feel empowered. I never see anyone enjoying them though because they drive like truck because they are ****ing trucks now matter how much "styling" they have! Will that adjective get edited out? http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif

Good point. A status car cold be like my neigbors wife's Durango (complete with soccer ball sticker on tailgate) or BMS, Merc, Lexus, Acura, Saab, Towncar.

I don't care what you drive... I do, however, care how you drive. And for some *odd* reason, I seem to always get cut off, nearly plowed into, ran out of my lane by people in really expensive cars. You'd think they would be more careful considering how much they paid! I guess it's one of those a fool and his money shall soon be parted kind of deals.

Interesting post. I recall a thread somewhere in here in which Fordman was the proud new owner of a BMW. I guess opinions change sometimes. :D

Check that out. For that price it probably has a LOT of miles, but it's a pretty sweet car. And if i would buy it it wouldnt be status would it? Its just something I'm used to, as opposed to all those american made brands I've never heard of..........

What do people consider Mustangs and Corvettes? Waste of money? Mid-life crisis? Dumb... I will own at least one of easch in my lifetime cause I want to own one. I think that if you can afford it and you want it, you should buy it.

Well, my Mother recently purchased a Lexus 300 SE and in our town, no matter how we're dressed when we pull up in that car we get treated with the most respect, as if we have tons of money and are a great political power or something. My mom got the car b/c the seats are automatically adjustuble, and have memory capabilities that is most useful for her and her arthritis and her bad hip. There are other reasons, mostly relating to her health/medical conditions that lead her to purchase the car, however she HATES the "instant status" when we pull up in that damn car!! I think it's funny b/c we have everyone at our becon call when we go somewhere, I have even heard people argue over us when we go out to eat, or shop where they can see our car b/c they think commision/tip etc. it's insane

Theres a big differance from people who buy cars because they like that specific car, or people who buy cars because they think it will make them look cool. I knew a lot of people at my old high school (armenian mostly) who wanted the most expencive Mercedes only because it was the most expencive Mercedes. That train of thought is the stupedest I've ever seen when it comes to cars. I love my car, and I only paid $100 for it, and the only problem it had when I got it was a trashed interior, a bad alternater and a vacuum leak...everything not hard or perticularly expencive if you know where to get the stuff. JUNK YARDS RULE!!! only at a junk yard can you get a 12A for $100.

I think you mean the Lexus 300 ES. Those are nice. They are basically Toyota Camry with some external cosmetic differences, luxury materials inside, and a slightly softer suspension. Keep in mind next time, you can the same exact same basic car with the Toyota brand name for a lot less money. The brand name Lexus, probably taken from the words Luxury, EXcellence, and excesS to appeal to the status element of the American consumer.

I remember seeing a documentary on Japanese selection of brand names. Kennex tennis rackets were named such because KENNedy was seen as a favorable name in America (the family of politicians in Massachusetts) and EXcellent was self explanitory.

Hey, if you got it, use it.

I figure if I have enough money later on in life to afford ridiculously expensive cars for no better reason than to own an expensive car, I damned well will. What else am I going to do with the money? Save it?

Around me the status vehicles are the BMW X5 4.6, 7 & 8 Series, Mercedes S55 & S600s, Hummer H2s... The everyday cars are your BMW 3 & 5 series, Lexuses, Volvos... So you can imagine what I look like in my '93 2.3L Mustang ;)
