Going there in August.

I need to know...

What is really interesting, unusual and exciting there?

I really like offbeat stuff.

For instance...

I dont care for beaches, cassinos, auto racing or any stuff like that.

Fishing is ok but I don't plan on going all the way somewhere just to do something I can do at home. Same goes for Golfing.

Maybe a visit to something unusual, bizarre, haunted.

I already am planning on going to the Biltmore in Ashville.

the Biltmore house in Ashville is amazing, but pricey to get into.... $35/person, IIRC.

Linville Gorge/Table Rock is great too, if you like the outdoors/hiking. that about 1-1.5 hrs from Ashville, depending how fast you drive.

Asheville in general is probably right up Criminal's alley. :)

The surrounding countryside is beautiful. The town itself is IMO an East Coast version of Berkeley. Lots of artists, hippies, etc...

Interestingly enough, it's also a sort of spiritual Mecca. The mountains around it are supposed to have a ton of quartz crystal. I was up there with some friends on Halloween weekend a couple years back & the whole town was overflowing with everything from Druids & hard core Wiccans to fluffy bunny Charmed & Buffy fan wannabes.

The beaches along the coast are also beautiful.

Fair warning though. The police in both Carolinas LOVE to target out of state vehicles, so keep in the speed limit while there. ;)

Well, I did MY bit to clean up Asheville... I brought Keylia out here, LOL :D

A friend of mine that I haven't heard from in a while at least USED to own the art supply store in the downtown historic area. Not sure if she still does after her divorce. :|

Great minds think alike. :p

I've heard nice things about Greenville & Charlotte.

I still stand by my evaluation of North Carolina. If I had to do it again, I'd probably choose the Greensboro/Ashville area. However I'm stuck where I am for the time being.

Actually no. Virginia and Georgia get that award.

OK then, count me in on Ashville.

Anywhere in particular you would recommend? That artist stuff sounds interesting. Any district in the city worth checking out?

raven rock is pretty cool -- huge rock in lee county, nc -- plenty of trails, some fishing, good views of the cape fear river.

museum of art in raleigh, nc is great for such a tiny museum. lots of good stuff on display -- they have a very nice ancients section.

acid park in wilson, nc (forget what county) is a collection of weird whirly-gigs, windmills, etc, made by a retired welder. it's free and really bizarre (supposedly a good place to drop acid, hence the name).

prospect hill, nc has a place called shangra-lai or something. it looks like a midget village. it was made by some old guy who liked to carve stone. i believe it is free.

double post

anyway, go see glenwood south in raleigh -- good entertainment district. a great restaurant to check out is big ed's in the city market area of raleigh (ask a local for directions). it is an institution: great southern food, a bunch of good ol' boy lawyers and politicians, etc. big ed still works the register sometimes. he is really big -- about 6'8" and 400 pounds. breakfast there is best.

The trip was canceled. My wife had surgery. I will be spending the next two weeks at home.
