View Full Version : Motocycle Riders?
Saison 07-13-2007, 09:50 AM To those of you who own or ride motocycles in states without helmet laws, do you wear one anyway? If not, why? Just because you can? Fear of bad hair? I see a lot of people without helmets on bikes down here and it makes me so nervous and worried for them. :(
Gibson 07-13-2007, 09:51 AM I wear one even though legally I don't have to.

I didn't know you had a motorcycle. :nice:
Good for you though, protect your precious cranium.
Back before that dumb bitch changed the law (Kathleen Babling BlankStare, current Gov of La.) and you didn't have to wear one, I would always wear a helmet. If I was working on the bike and just driving it around near the house, I wouldn't, but if I went for a ride... I always had one on
I even wear a full face helmet on my ATV

They repealed the law in PA recently as well. I never understood it.
Cool photo, Kraw, and way to go, bein' all safe & responsible. :nice:
Ironweed 07-13-2007, 10:00 AM I think it is strange that states have mandatory seatbelt laws but not mandatory motorcycle helmet laws. (It was like that in Connecticut even before there was federal pressure for seatbelt laws.)

That is strange. Doesn't make much sense to me. I guess I'm curious who's actually pulling to repeal the helmet laws?

I don't, I just have my license.

Shadoglare 07-13-2007, 11:07 AM Helmet laws were temporarily passed and then repealed here in IL as well.
I don't have a motorcycle, but was taking lessons at one time and had already decided I'd be wearing a helmet if I went and got one (though probably a "skull cap" type and not a full-coverage helmet).
I also wear a helmet when I'm riding my bike around cars. As another rider once put it "if you're not wearing one, you've probably never seen a rider's head go through somebody's windshield."

I learned the hard way. I wear a helmet on a bicycle now if I'm by cars or in the backwoods. The latter because, if nothing else, it keeps all the crap out of your hair :p Moreso because treetrunks hurt@!
Feenix566 07-13-2007, 11:12 AM I wear a full-faced helmet every time I get on the bike, even when I'm in PA and I don't have to.
But I still say the law should allow people to ride without helmets if they want to. I figure if you're stupid enough to ride around without one, your genes should probably be removed from the pool. Everybody's better off that way.

The libertarian in my heart agrees with you, but then I think of the hardworking nurses and doctors whose skills would be put to better use than to put stupid people back together. I dunno. :hmm:
Good for you, btw, Feenix, for wearing a helmet. We need to keep that handsome face intact. :D
Ponycar_302 07-13-2007, 12:25 PM I wear one. Next spring I'm planning on buying a new bike and will wear a shorty for a while. After a few months I may go without it tough. I haven't decided.
I went on a poker run a couple of months ago and thought about not wearing it. It's not like motorists won't notice 50 bikes coming at them. I kept it on because I only have a permit right now and a helmet is mandatory in Pa with a permit. I'll decide whether or not to wear it in the future. I wouldn't go without it for now though.

What's the thought process behing not wearing it though? Because you're going to be around other bikes when you don't? Or, are you resigned that if you crash & die, so be it? Just curious. Considering you're the primary wage earner for your family, and all.

I concur.
Betrade 07-13-2007, 06:50 PM I used to ride MX, and if not for the fact that I always wore a helmet, I wouldn't be alive.
I went headfirst over the bars into a tree one morning after clipping a small stump while trail riding, and it hurt; really bad. In fact, it hurt for over a week. there's no way I would have lived without that helmet.
I believe in freedom of choice, but IMO, choosing not to wear a helmet on a motorcycle is a really foolish choice. It may feal great, but it's extremely unwise, even for the best riders, because not all drivers are good drivers, and many don't even know what mirrors are for, nor do they know what a blind spot is.
The road is hard, trees are hard, and other vehicles are hard. Hell, a deer is hard. I know, because I've hit two.
When the human head impacts a hard object at even relatively low speeds, the results are not pretty. My cousin hit the back end a Jeep head first at about 50 mph, and lived, thanks to his helmet. He had two teeth in one of his lungs, and he was laid up for over a year, but thanks to that helmet, he's alive today.
I know two other folks who weren't so lucky. they both dies in motorcycle crashes and neither were wearing helmets. One was thrown over 100 feet into a jersey wall, and they had to scrape parts of him off of the road. The other clipped the side of a dump truck and he was thrown into a culvert, where he died within 3-4 minutes; screaming in pain. They had to have a closed casket for him because his face was completely mangled. His neck was also broken.
So the moral of the story is; wearing a helmet is usually a pretty good idea. They don't always save lives, but they definitely increase the odds of surviving a crash with an intact head. I don't know of anyone dying from wearing one, but it's probably happened.
I was flying along one day at about 60 in the woods, and a bee flew into my helmet. That was a real treat. It sounded like a freakin' airplane. It didn't sting me though.
Ponycar_302 07-13-2007, 10:31 PM What's the thought process behing not wearing it though?
I don't know.
TheAlmighty 07-13-2007, 10:33 PM I wear a helmet in my car..
zipper99 08-05-2007, 05:48 PM Wearing the best full face money can buy is the only way to go.
I've had countless "offs" and seen the scrapes on the helmet sides that would have been my cranium.
It's not just other vehicles, or dipshits turning in front of you, a rabbit, a raised manhole cover on a bend or nice pool of spilt diesel fuel will send you and the bike freewheeling.
I don't buy the "personal freedom" schtick, it seems no more than a dumb, macho posturing (like riding in a tee shirt, shorts and sneakers).

Planning on getting an R6 or maybe even an R1 or Busa. depends on what insurance is like on the R1 and the Busa at that time.

Getting a Busa for your first bike would be a little like buying a Ferrari for a 16 year old. What do you think is gonna happen?

I know. I've got a death wish. Make it all end :(
jk. I rode a busa about 3 months ago. not an R1 though. I think the same busa is still on sale for like 7K but I don't think it will be then. I've ridden enough that I felt fine on the busa but I wouldn't dare push it hard which is why I am mainly thinking about an R6.
