Titan6400 05-23-2001, 03:58 PM Sweet car, sucks about the paint though. Afraid it sounds like you'd need a new coat of paint too, since putting clearcoat over something that's been weathered at all usually doesn't work too well. Good luck...
on my last truck I had, my detailer would strip the old clear coat off and put a new one on. There would be lots of red on his buffer when he was thru.. maybe some wet sanding before clear coat application would help.
BTW, aren't most paints clearcoat/basecoat paint? as in, there is not seperate clearcoat to apply?

the paint probably did look crappy. the way base coat / clear coat works, is first you spray the car w/ self-etching primer, then do the body work. after that you spray just enough "base" coat to cover the car. the base coat isn't terribly shiney, its actually dull. then you apply numerous layers of "clear" coat, and build it up. finally you sand down and fill the imperfections in the clear, then polish it.
sounds like he did the easy part. and you got taken. thats why family members and car related matter don't mix. somehow it always comes back in the end to bite you.
sorry for your trouble.

CB93COBRA 06-15-2001, 03:49 PM There are "single stage" paints, they are cheaper generally than "base-clear" systems, both can achieve good looks. how old is the paint, is it a solid color or does it have metallics/pearls? It is not necessary to apply many applications of clear, one app of two coats is generally sufficient to sand and polish minor blemishes(dirt, orange-peel(texture)) It could be possible to clear over the existing single stage paint, depends on a few things. any Q's on specifics just e-mail me. I am a painter, have worked at a shop for over 8 years I can answer most questions.
hot302 06-16-2001, 07:42 PM Sorry to hear that Kellie. I hope everything works out okay with it.
CB93Cobra is very knowledgable in the paint business,so by all means take advantage of him! http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif

heh, i was hoping a professional might give some insite, as i am only a amateur painter. i am a lacquer man mostly, i have yet to try the base coat / clear coat yet. probably my 65 rambler will get that treatment in some kind of light blue.

CB93COBRA 06-21-2001, 09:58 PM You had it pretty close, just some minor things that are optional, and the fact that there are single stage paints, if you want any more specifics, I'd be glad to help how I can.
