View Full Version : Going to Carolina in my mind.

My husband's got his eye on the Carolinas as our potential escape from Delaware. I've only been there (Outer Banks, NC) once, but it was quite lovely.

Has anyone travelled/lived there? What were your experiences? Things to avoid, things to see?

We're thinking about taking a long trip down to figure out if it's a viable option or not. If not, then who knows, prolly back to PA. Can't stand Delaware much longer. :(

Plan on going to NC this August. Plan on going to the Smokeys and visiting a friend in Raleigh.

We're considering a lot of options right now. PA is one, but finding work and affordable housing is the trouble. Go ask that lady who owns our old house if she'll sell it back to us. :|

During the summer it is... Just don't come here in the winter :hmm:
During the summer you've got market square, beaches, downtown, the waterfront, the riverfront, the flats, the warehouse district, playhouse square(theatre district), the museum district, Lakewood, The Steelyard, parks, parks, parks and the gateway district :)
LOTS of stuff to do :)

I'll add it to the agenda. Dunno when we're going to be traveling yet, as we are still campaigning to pay the dental bill off. If I could get the money back for our vacation this summer, I would.
But I would like to see Cleveland, though. If not this summer, maybe next.

Not much not to like in North Carolina actually. You've got the coast to the east and the mountains to the west. The cost of living isn't bad, and is in par with wages. You can actually purchase a decent home, depending on what area of North Carolina you live, for under $200,000 (3 bedroom, 2 bath with a garage).
The area's that are really growing now are the Raleigh, Charlotte, and Greensboro area's. Raleigh is actually growing faster than Atlanta is. Durham is one of the area's that you want to avoid living due to the crime rate.
Some of the friendliest people on earth live here too. The term "southern hospitality" couldn't be truer.
One of the drawbacks due to the growth is taxes. It seems as though that's North Carolina's answer to everything: raise taxes.

Oh, forgot to mention, there are plenty of transplanted yankee's here. Who do you think educates the natives.

That's what we're looking for, actually. A place with everything. :)

Good to know. We're thinking about visiting Charlotte in the fall.

It would be nice to have some of that.

That's pretty true in the north, too. Delaware has no sales tax, but it gets factored into the cost of everything else.

That's what I really wanted to hear. :D

We're probably going to NC this fall. As soon as I know what my schedule's going to look like, that is. Yay!

North Carolina is a beautiful place. I was born and raised there. Lived in the foothills, the sand hills and on the coast. Been to the smokies more times than I can think of. Each place has it's own beauty and character, personally I prefer the foothills. God I miss that scenery.

Let me just add. I’ve been to more countries then most people can say. I've been on almost every continent, but nothing compares to the beauty I witnessed growing up in North Carolina.

well, north carolina is pretty nice.

i lived there throughout high school in the research triangle park area (morrisville, nc, to be specific).

coming from an urban area in denmark, i was just not used to suburbia--but suburbia does have its charms.

cost of living is fairly cheap in the triangle, probably, outside of the charlotte-mecklenburg area, the most expensive place to live in the state. you can buy a 2500 or so sq. foot house in wake county (where the capital, raleigh, is located) for around 170k. just need to search around for a bit, that's all.

uh, raleigh is a nice city, nowhere near a world class city, though. lots of nice restaurants, great park system (one of the best in the united states--it has won many awards), but not much in terms of night life, unfortunately.

charlotte is a bigger city, and really feels it. it has a rail system (raleigh doesnt) as well as more nightlife, more of an urban core, etc.

I'll pass that along to my husband. He's so eager to go. I'm excited, myself.

Great info, Atari! We'll definitely use this to help plan the cities to see while we're there. Thanks!! :)

I've been to Atlanta a few times. Its an okay enough town. But their alcohol content restriction on beer would make the city unlivable for me. :(
