The Bible states that Jesus was stripped of his clothes. But every crucifix I have seen shows Jesus wearing an undergarment.

I always thought the depiction of Chirst in an undergarment while dying on the cross was a way to grant some dignity to the man who many consider to be the Lord and Savior for all mankind.

In fact the only depiction I saw of Christ crucified nude was in The Last Temptation of Christ, which even today is considered highly controversial.

I saw on History Channel some stuff on crucifications and it showed victims wearing undergarments during such executions. I would add that the show was pretty graphic in its depiction of such execution methods. It would lead me to believe that the makers of this documentary would not lie about how executions really were. :hmm:

Roamn crucifixion was for the lowest of criminals, and they were usually stripped completely from what I've read. Humiliation was part of the torture.

Artists started painting the undergarments on later, and it caught on.

Jesus' garments were good enough that Roman soldiers drew lots for them. I doubt that people wore any kind of underwear especially if they were poor but I can understand why artists portrayed Jesus as wearing something -- like they did Adam and Eve "wearing" leaves.

I hear that as the blood pools lower in the body you get a massive erection. I can't imagine seeing a crucifix with Jesus on full alert like that. Maybe too much authenticity isn't warranted here.

i'm thinking whether i should steer clear of this topic, after all i'm an alien. but i'm gonna put forward a question nevertheless. Why did those artists'd like to put a pipal's leaf on Adam's body? the Bible says he's stark-naked when Adam's in the Eden.

I'm pretty positive crucified prisoners would have been naked, the convention of clothing Jesus (even in programmes on History Channel) is a hangover of the Church's abhorence of the naked human form - it would also mean that a naked Jesus would be shown as circumcised thus confirming his Jewishness and undermining the "Westernisation" of his image as a tall, blond haired, blue eyed Aryan...
