Some dude I talked to today was a pagan.

We were talking about the may poles and stuff.

He said that his group used to gather on mayday. Actually they spent the night before cutting down a tall tree, cutting the branches and made a may pole. The Pole would be decorated with ribbons and stuff.

The men folk would dig a deep hole and the ladies would deck the pole. Then they would put the pole into the ground. Men would do this job as the maypole was actually a pagan symbol.

Then on the day of the event they would dance, with men dancing one direction and the women the other.

Then once the dance was ended people would go to the woods and have sex.

I don't know if all celebrations are this way but thats how they did it.

Similar to Easter.

Similar to Easter.

Whoa - if your Easter celebrations involve orgies in the woods, I'm obviously missing out...

Isn't this a Sound of Music kind of celebration?

When I was in grade school, a pole had several ribbons attached to the top, and boys and girls went different directions, bobbing in and out until the pole was wrapped in a pattern that looked like Chinese finger cuffs.

Nothing pagan that I observed - just a bunch of South Dakotans with an excuse for a huge potluck.

Most things don't seem pagan- but that is doesn't mean they weren't.
