anyone watch the oscars last night? i'm afraid i have to admit that i wasted my time thusly....glutton for punishment. the whole event was puke-worthy as usual; more self-congratulation in one room and one night than occurs in a year's time in the rest of the world.

the height of this nauseating event was the ego-felating of al gore over his documentary. of course it won. no matter what you think of the global warming debate, it's just utterly sickening when follywood lavishes someone with their approval. celebrities are literally convinced that they have a mandate to speak out about all manner of political and social issues, and that somehow, given their privilege, that they are more qualified to. i have yet to see any evidence to suggest that hollywood celebrities are any better placed to understand social and political issues than any other american. i would actually say they are less qualified, given that they live their lives in such totally uncommon, sequestered ways.

why can't al-qaeda target the oscars with a dirty bomb?

oh truth teller. i forgot....you have some contractual obligation to classify everyone as 'this' or 'that'. i can't stand celebrities and how pompous and deluded they are. it's pretty much as simple as that...that's all the thread is about. if hollow-wood jumped on the alan keyes or pat buchanan bandwagon and started trumpeting his causes, it would be just as sickening, because it would be just as selfish and insincere. i don't care who they endorse, and my disgust with them does not reflect on my politics, or v./v.

Just keepin' it honest.

Neoncons are usually stealth [and I don't blame them for that either,I'd be ashamed to admit I was a conservative too].

i can't stand celebrities and how pompous and deluded they are.

That's a blanket statment isn't it?

I find that people who say that are usally conservatives who don't have a problem with the person's status, they have a problem because they disagree with that person's politics.

If that's not you ,then you are the exception ,not the rule.

How is it selfish or insincere?

You might disagree with people who like Gore, but I don't see where liking Gore is "selfish and insincere",quite the opposite.

Anyway,Gore didn't crash the party,he was in a nominated film.

I saw the film and it deserved it's nomination/award[s].

Why?

celebrities are literally convinced that they have a mandate to speak out about all manner of political and social issues, and that somehow, given their privilege, that they are more qualified to.

They simply have views, resources, and platforms. People appearintly like to listen since the funding never stops coming. If you have an idea you feel strongly about, and a platform, I have a feeling you'll be presenting your views and opinions as well.

i would actually say they are less qualified, given that they live their lives in such totally uncommon, sequestered ways.

A lot of celebrities come from humble backgrounds. A lot of them are just egocentric *******s who will feel enlightend for believing what they believe, regardless of what they do. But just the same, some are well read and educated in what they want to present and discuss, far more so then the average american who keeps American Idol alive.

i have yet to see any evidence to suggest that neocon bloggers or AM talk radio blowhards are any better placed to understand social and political issues than any other american

EDIT to add

The OP is especially ironic coming from someone that uses (until a few days ago) one of the biggest Hollywood celebrities as an avatar

I think people should be upfront about what they are.

I have disagreements with some other liberals/leftists on some issues but I am a liberal/leftist.

My bent might be more moderate and independent thinking then some liberals/leftists,but I am overall a liberal/leftist and am not stealth about that fact, because I'm not ashamed of it.

9/11 united the majority of the US in harmony. people of nearly all political ideologies stood together united in grief

Maybe some members of the left took a considered approach looking at where us failed foregin policy wise to encourage the attack but i don't think any respectable leftist (and that's 99% of leftists) hailed and praised the terrorists who attacked the US that day
