yuppy 01-25-2007, 07:51 PM i disagree. the health care tax benefit is the best idea a president has put forth in a LOOONNNGG time.
most people either neglect the health care issue or think it should be nationalized without paying taxes... both of which will make our healthcare system fall from no.1 in the world to 2nd world levels.
tsquare 01-25-2007, 09:47 PM There was a Democratic response?
And why should we care?

Rubbish, here's figures from 1991 study which have in fact got worse:
Percent of population covered by public health care:
ALL NATIONS (except below) 100%
France, Austria 99
Switzerland, Spain, Belgium 98
Germany 92
Netherlands 77
United States 40
Infant Mortality Rate (per 1,000 live births):
United States 10.4
United Kingdom 9.4
Germany 8.5
Denmark 8.1
Canada 7.9
Norway 7.9
Netherlands 7.8
Switzerland 6.8
Finland 5.9
Sweden 5.9
Japan 5.0
Percent of people with normal body mass:
Germany Men 53% Woman37
Finland M 51 W 37
United Kingdom M 46 W 38
Canada M 52 W 29
Switzerland M 49 W 30
France M 44 W 30
Denmark M 44 W 25
United States M 47 W 22
Sweden M 44 W 25
Nor is America's international reputation in health care as high as many Americans boast it to be. "Ask anyone you know from a foreign country... which country is the envy of the world when it comes to health care," Rush Limbaugh wrote in See, I Told You So. But according to a Gallup poll published by the Toronto Star, only 2 percent of all Canadians believe that the U.S. has a better health care system than their own.
The fact is that America does not have the finest health care system in the world; it has the finest emergency care system in the world. Highly trained American doctors can summon Star Wars-type technology in saving patients who have become seriously injured or critically ill. But as far as preventative medicine goes, the U.S. is still in the Stone Age. It should be no surprise that in America's health care business, entrepreneurs will take a pound of cure over an ounce of prevention every time.
But in reality, what affects the health of Americans lies more outside the formal health care system than within it. In Europe during the last century, life expectancy nearly doubled after nations purified their drinking water and created sanitation systems. In America during this century, the highest cancer rates are found in neighborhoods around the chemical industry. A healthy diet and exercise provide better health than most medicines in most circumstances. Other nations have realized that factors outside the hospital are more important than factors inside it, and have used this bit of wisdom to lower their health care costs.

Sadly you're 100% correct, the healthcare system in this county is an embarrassment, especially for the richest nation on earth. Anybody who thinks otherwise has never had any experience with it, the system here is based on how much certain fat cats can make off of it, instead of how best to actually help the sick..:nonono:
GROFF200 01-26-2007, 09:26 AM I thought Webb gave one of the best most sincere speeches I've heard from a politician in a long time.
Unfortunately, I think he's speaking for himself and doesn't represent the interests of either party with his positions. Neither Republicans or Democrats have much interest in changing the status quo.
Truth Teller 01-26-2007, 04:09 PM Here's Bush's health care plan:Don't get sick.
Stone 01-26-2007, 05:24 PM Grooming Webb for a future Presidential run? I think so.
Mobile Vulgus 01-27-2007, 01:01 AM Health care in the US is the best there is, but it is hampered by government. Take government out of the picture and our health care would improve by leaps and bounds.
One place government CAN help is to quash the abuse of medical malpractice lawsuits against doctors.
cirque 01-29-2007, 09:24 AM Webb will be president someday.
Don't bet the farm on it

Unless our elected representatives are now being chosen by the medical profession, I think government can and should do things other than make sure doctors don't get sued.
Feenix566 01-29-2007, 01:07 PM Jim Webb's speech sounded like Corporate Avenger wrote it. He basically advocates looting all corporations who contribute to America's economic health. Kinda like killing the goose that laid the golden egg, eh?
Radical leftists do more for the conservative side than anyone else.

I'm not sure that advocating the good of the citizens over the good of the corporations is radical leftists idealology Feenix.
More and more it seems the US is tailoring its foreign policy to align with corporate policy. Unfortunately, there are times when making decisions in the best interest of the country puts one in direct contradiction with what's best for the corporations.

CA is hardly a leftist IMO.
Guido 01-29-2007, 06:08 PM Jim Webb appears to be one of about 3 people in Congress who has some integrity and brains.
He should get the hell out of the Democrat Party before they destroy him.

I'm that good huh?:nice:

Because expecting corporations to abide by the same laws Joe citizen has to, and to quit the real looting, the looting corporate America participates in. Along with their destruction of our representative Democracy and their destructive practices which kill and do grievous harm to the environment is looting "them"..
Do you know what a Plutocracy is and have any idea why that's a bad system??
Radical leftists do more for the conservative side than anyone else.
A radical to a modern US conservative is anybody who is not White, Christian, religious fundamentalist, racist, war loving, and concerned about the "state of the union", who cares what cave men think?

It's hilarious to see a stark, raving leftist like those here praising Webb. It is proof that they know NOTHING about his REAL ideas. If they did, such wacked out lefties would call him a cracker racist!
But, all he need do is hate Bush and ... viola... he is an instant star in the leftists eyes.
