View Full Version : Ineffective Congressional Democrats
soylentgreen 01-25-2007, 01:14 PM The minimum wage bill was defeated and they wasted time passing a non-binding resolution against the troop surge.
I wonder when Democrats are going to realize that they're not completely in control.
Mystlet 01-25-2007, 01:19 PM Did you post a thread every time the republicans failed at something, or is this merely one-sided?

They'll realize that only if Republicans decide to be a part of the process and exercise their power.
Sacrifice Pelosi
Rock on!
GROFF200 01-25-2007, 01:54 PM Yay! Let's cheer for our favourite team!
After all, they're not making decisions that affect our lives and the lives of generations to come. It's just a sporting event!
enkahootz 01-25-2007, 01:59 PM yeah, what groff said...
the title of this thread should have been "Ineffective Congress"
soylentgreen 01-25-2007, 02:07 PM Did you post a thread every time the republicans failed at something, or is this merely one-sided?Nope. Other people did that for me.
It isn't so much about failure...as wasting our time. The non-binding resolution against the troop surge is a waste of time.

The minimum wage increase doesn't affect me at all. Never has. I've never worked for minimum wage in my life...and I've been working since I was 16.
A non-binding resolution against the troop surge doesn't affect my life either. It does nothing! It is a waste of time. The only reason I can think to pass a non-binding resolution is to play politics...nothing more.
Instead, why don't they pass a law that will actually force the president to stop the war? Oh, that's right...the president would veto it.
What I'm trying to say here is...the Democrats are going to have to cut their honeymoon over the election short and step into reality. They are actually going to have to work with the president if they want to get anything done. They're not going to be able to ram their agenda down his throat.
Bear Stories 01-25-2007, 02:13 PM Gee, one would think that it would take more than a week or two to decide that the Dems are ineffective. Or are we now subscribing to the "legislation at the speed of light" theory?

Welcome to politics...
That's the notion of the "separation of powers" and checks and balances of the govt. branches...
I think they all understand the concept.
And everything Congress (or the govt) does affects you, either directly or indirectly.
Stone 01-25-2007, 05:03 PM This congress may not be as deplorable as the last one, but they sure can try!

Ahh...now your political positions are so clear. It's all about YOU. The minimum wage doesn't matter to YOU because you make more, so to hell with raising it for everybody else. Iraq doesn't matter to YOU because you don't have people trying to kill you, so it shouldn't matter for anyone else either.
When Congress is doing their jobs correctly, they are supposed to represent the will of the people. This includes YOU, but it does not consist entirely of YOU. Therefore, believe it or not, it is not all about YOU.
h2g2Fan 01-25-2007, 07:15 PM yes, congrats to the republicans for temporarily blocking a minimum wage increase. dems will soon win on this issue, though
tsquare 01-25-2007, 09:52 PM "Ineffective Democrats"
Redundant
Even Will Rodgers knew this

You need to follow along. Groff said that they're making decisions that effect us. I merely responded that none of the decisions they're making right now effect me in the least.
How does a non-binding resolution against the troop surge affect you? Does it give you a warm fuzzy feeling inside? That's about all it's good for. It is nonsense!!! Pure and simple.
soylentgreen 01-26-2007, 01:51 PM yes, congrats to the republicans for temporarily blocking a minimum wage increase. dems will soon win on this issue, thoughPerhaps. Time will tell. But, again, the people didn't vote for an increase in the minimum wage. They voted to do something about the war. Instead of delivering on that, the Democrats are focused on their pet projects.

I think they all understand the concept. They sure don't act like it. The Democrats are just salivating over the idea od ramming their agenda too. Just now they're starting to realize that they can't do it alone.
And everything Congress (or the govt) does affects you, either directly or indirectly.Well, that's a good point. Of course, you are right...with the exception of the non-binding resolution that does nothing. I guess it did do something...it took up time and energy that could have been spent doing something meaningful.
As for the minimum wage increase...it affects me indirectly. You're right. It will put more pressure on businesses to ship low-skill jobs overseas. It will stop companies from investing in new technologies, new equipment, new buildings, etc. That will affect us all...particularly those of us who make our living making and selling those things.
GROFF200 01-26-2007, 02:42 PM You need to follow along. Groff said that they're making decisions that effect us. I merely responded that none of the decisions they're making right now effect me in the least.

A non-binding resolution against the troop surge is the first step of the political process to create enough support to have a binding resolution. This step is necessary because the Democrats don't have the same clear majority in Senate that they do in the House.
If they get the non-binding resolution to a vote, then the positions of various Senators are made clear on the public record. Those who vote against it would then be politically vulnerable if public opinion is in oppostion to their votes.
And I would argue the decisions they are making now do affect you, but perhaps not immediately. The effects might even be delayed and indirect, but they exist nonetheless.

six states had minimum wage hikes on the ballots - all were successful
Mobile Vulgus 01-27-2007, 12:57 AM I hate to do it But I agree with Bear.
How can we say they are "ineffective"? They have only been there about 15 minutes!!
I am sure the damage that they will do is going to be immense, but even Democrats can't destroy America in 15 minutes!

I think it's a natural reaction to Pelosi's promise to ram their agenda through in the first 100 hours of operation, before they allow any debate or opposition input or such nonsense.

After supporting the DeLay Congress for two years, I don't think any rightwingers have any business complaining about being shut out in Congress.
