MADISON, Wis. — Hunters donated a record 11,845 deer to a program that feeds needy people across the state, or 4,600 more than a year ago, the state Department of Natural Resources reported Monday.
The new record — eclipsing the 10,939 donated two years ago — reflects the "tremendous efforts" of thousands of hunters who killed extra deer to help feed hungry people and reduce the deer herd, said Laurie Fike, the DNR's coordinator of the program.

"Our hats are off to these caring hunters," she said.

Hunters donated 7,201 deer to the program a year ago.

Fike said 143 butcher shops in 59 counties participated in the program this year, turning the donated deer into more than 533,000 pounds of ground venison that were distributed to food pantries.

Since the donation program started in 2000, hunters have donated about 54,000 deer, an average of 7,700 each year. The donations have produced 2.4 million pounds of ground venison for hungry families, Fike said.

Kind of demolishes that "knuckle dragging evil killer for the sake of killing" hunter image, doesn't it? I wonder how many vegans went into the wild at dawn and hunted down extra carrots and beans to feed hungry kids.

Would they give the veggies a fighting chance, or would they use overwhelming technology to ensure an unfair fight? I could see it now, no gloves or shoes allowed.
