Gas prices dropped 18 cents in the last month to 2.16 a gallon. Some places even see below 2 dollars.

Why is Hawaii's gas prices so high? The average there is 2.90 a gallon. What's the cause for this?

Transportation costs.

Paid 1.85 in Missouri yesterday.

A couple things, one the state mandated medical system adds costs, transportation and I believe Hawaii has more taxes on Gas. But the prices are about the same here in Canada. In our case its higher gas taxes that are the primary culprit.

Dont get me wrong personally I believe gas taxes should be higher along with gas prices and the revenue used to fund alternative energy research. Until we feel it in our pocket book in a serious way alternative energy just wont move forward fast enough. I favor a carbon tax.

You simply have NO IDEA of what "high prices" for gasoline really are.
Here in The Netherlands gas averages around Euro1.34 per litre, that works out to $5.07 per US gallon, so excuse me if we don't get upset over $2.90 !!

from 2005:
Higher-than-average taxes on gasoline in Hawaii contribute to those high prices. The state levies a 16 cent per gallon tax, and various local authorities add on other taxes.

In Honolulu, for example, total state, federal and local gas taxes amount to about 53 cents per gallon, one of the highest rates in the United States. The national average, according to the American Petroleum Institute, is about 42 cents per gallon.

the cost of transportation must also affect the price.

Nah, we use bicycles most of the time anyway. We have a 12 year old Peugeot 306 with a 1.4 four banger that gives good mileage but often sits in the parking space for 2 or 3 weeks at a time.

Of course, you won't be quite so chirpy if the Iraq situation gets worse and Iran gets dragged in. if supplies are hit OPEC will rape the market for all it's worth and the Exxon, Shell, BP profits will be even more cosmic with gas hitting $5 or $10 a gallon and the guys with Hummers and Dodge V10's won't be able to give them away.

At least in Europe we have retained an extensive public transport system of trains, coaches and trams, so doing without a car will be a lot less painful. I've been in the US many times and still shake my head when I see young, fit people using a car to drive a half mile for a carton of milk or some bread.

What can we say, we're an automobile nation.
