About 1,000 Spanish youths have clashed with police during the night on the edge of the capital Madrid.

The youths said they wanted to take on criminal gangs of Latin American immigrants who they complained were dominating their neighbourhood.

Three people were hurt and seven held in the clashes in the Alcorcon suburb.

Police fired tear gas at the rioters, who wore balaclavas or scarves to hide their faces and pelted them with bottles and coins. A gang of mainly Latin American immigrants, calling themselves the Latin Kings, is active in Alcorcon.

Usually it is like this around here (Europe that is): Immigrations goes up, crime goes up.

I wouldn't think the Spanish have any sense to even deal with EITHER gang issue (home grown OR immigrants). The mayor of Madrid recently decreed that all gangs would be forthwith be considered "community groups" and allowed state money for their "activities" and "programs".

The Spaniards are no idiots, their government is. Plus, I, and many others, suspect that many politicians are getting a big part of the cake when it comes to organized crime, so it figures...

And the Spaniards have quite a long tradition of fighting injustice by their hands when the government is looking the other way around.
