A new direction for US foes? Or just some shucking and jiving?

Syria has condemned attacks by fighters opposed to Iraq's US-backed army and security forces as "terrorism", marking a shift in Damascus's relation with its eastward neighbour.

A statement issued on Saturday at the end of a visit by Jalal Talabani, Iraq's president, to Damascus, stated that Syria will aim to help arrest civil strife in Iraq.

A joint Syrian-Iraqi statement said: "The two sides affirmed the need to preserve Iraqi unity and condemned all forms of terrorism that target Iraqi civilians, infrastructure, places of worship, army and security."

"[Syrian] President Assad affirmed that Syria will exert all its efforts to help the process of national reconciliation and spread the suitable political and media climate to achieve this noble goal," the statement said.

The al-Sadr movement held a joint news conference on Sunday with members of the Shia Alliance, to which the group belongs, to announce their return to parliament.

Bahaa al-Araji, a senior member of the al-Sadr group, said: "Since there has been a response to our demands, we declare that we will attend parliament today."

Mahmoud al-Mashadani, a parliamentary speaker, said that all the parliamentary parties would form a committee to discuss the reasons for the boycott in an attempt to resolve the issues.

"This is a new beginning," he said. "We want to say to the world that an Iraqi solution for Iraqi problems is the key, and others must support these solutions."

Syria is making a preemptive political strike to ensure that they can announce themselves as "against terrorism" and keep GWB and his cronies off their front lawn.

Never believe a Muslim. They have lies built right in to their "religion". Power is ALL they understand. Kill enough of them and they will amazingly find reason to do the right thing.

Maybe it's just me, but that doesn't make any sense. Since 9-11 we've killed maybe a couple hundred thousand of them and they just keep coming.

If syria in fact acts on their words, this will be a big help for everyone involved. We just have to keep our eyes open about this issue, as syria's track record is abysmal

The problem is,we have killed them in unpublicized, amazingly unconnected instances. I am talking a "Hirsohima" (not necessarily nuclear, though) styled event. And not just in one nation, either.

I sure hope that if we ever see a dirty bomb or a bio bomb in the USA we kill at least 20 times more Muslims than they got of us. And we need to get them in multiple places at once.

Wiping out Mecca would be a good start.

concider that the terrorists in iraq are mainly suniis, while hezbollah (syria supported) is shjit. and that syria has cracked down very hard on extremists within syria itself, allready for decades. syria just forms an alliance with iraq because they share enemies.

Wiping out Mecca may sound like fun to you and I, however, all that would manage to do is radicalize the remaining 999,000,000 muslims.
